“Good place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

Nikko park lodge is a bit away from main but has great scenery and great walk around.

We got only dormitory during peak season of autumn but it was warm.
The hotel owner knows english very well.

Breakfast was nice. There is a small pub nearby for relaxing time.

Woild like to visit again.

The best part of this place is that it's set in among a lot of trees on the outskirts and close proximity to a cozy but nice onsen. Getting around isn't problem if you like walking or cycling. They serve food and also have cup of noodles available for purchase.
The whole place has a cozy, worn in family feel.
However, the mixed dorm room on the ground floor is next to the common room and the sound travels. I unfortunately heard the owner yelling at someone, in addition to the tv etc. Worse still is that the dorm serves as a throughway for the owning family (one door in from the main space and one door that leads to somewhere they need to go often), and they use this passage at night and in the morning when people are sleeping

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from Nikko Park Lodge as most English reviews place it somewhere in between a hostel and hotel, which I would now agree is accurate. Nikko Park Lodge Mountainside has the relaxed community feel of a clean hostel, with the private individual space of a typical Japanese hotel. It is not fancy, so if you are looking for that crisp hotel feeling, look elsewhere (rooms feel lived-in to be sure), but everything is clean (and I have very high standards for cleanliness), the prices are very reasonable, and the rooms were larger than expected. The common spaces have a great, relaxed atmosphere and there are libations and food on offer, along with free tea and WiFi. The staff was incredibly nice, and went out of their way to help us out with everything from directions to rides into town. The walk to town is an attraction in of itself, and easy proximity to an onsen is a bonus. Definitely a funky little place, but in the good way that I think most down-to-earth travelers hope to stumble upon. Will definitely be back!

Positives:
- Extremely friendly and helpful proprietor and staff
- Warm, homey common room with wood-stove
- Comfy, quirky room layouts
- Affordable and filling in-house breakfast and dinner buffets
- Gorgeous grounds
- Free, fast and high capacity wireless access
- Dorm wing and other multiple-bed rooms make it ideal for group travelers

Negatives:
- With some precipitously steep staircases, low ceilings and sudden drops, you have to be very careful where you step
- First floor common bath-room is somewhat grim (in-room bathrooms are just fine)
- If you're walking, it's not very close to Nikko temple complexes (an easy 10-15 minute drive, though)
- Can get cold at night, but electric blankets are provided

In sum: I would definitely come here again. You're not signing up for a four star hotel by any means, but for backpackers or casual travelers in need of a comfortable night's stay in a pleasant atmosphere, it's a great choice.

Room Tip: The 3, 4 and 5 person rooms on the second floor have the most interesting and funky layouts

A little way out of town but worth the slight inconvenience. Ken is a hospitable and helpful host. Comfy, clean and well-appointed rooms. Relaxing lounge/dining room with warm wood fire. Simple but filling meals. Good all round value.

We arrived at tobu station and took a taxi to the hotel, cause we knew it was about 15mins walk uphill. The taxi costs ¥710 which is worth it, cause it would be too hard to walk with bags on your back! The owner speaks very good English, and he was so helpful and informative about where to go and what to see!
The room was spacious, with an ensuite bathroom. They offer breakfast and dinner which you have to book in advance, but it's not the cheapest you can find! We always had dinner in town, which was quite dead by 17:30hrs!
Walking from the hotel to town & back is easy without any large bags, even in the dark cause there are lit roads all thorough the way, but we always had a flash light with us just in case!

Location was fairly good, with it being a 20min walk to major temples/sites. The shuttle service offered to the station every morning was useful. English is well spoken, and advice was good. Apart from this, the large open living area of hostel with log stove is really the only good thing about this place.

On the whole though this place has a slightly impersonal approach, with chaotic organisation. Meals were late, and often forgotten about, which is made worse by the fact that you pay a slightly pricey amount when you order. Portions were not up to the job given hiking is your likely pursuit.

On the whole the place is not that clean and the shower room is especially dirty and smelly with broken fixtures. Onsen/bath was out of use without explanation. All of the Shampoo/soap bottles had not been replenished.

Laundry is not a listed service, which is inconvenient.
