“An enigma”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2006

This is a bizarre place. The public areas are great, big dining room, lovely comunal baths, nice little lounge area with a big telly and free internet access. All looked good for our £50 a night. The room, however, was a nasty damp little cell that smelt musty and had filthy walls (when we took the coathangers off of their peg on the wall, there was a coathanger shaped grime patch on the wall. Nice.). The sheets were clean but the beds were pushed against the wall, so we ended sleeping in one position all night! We were due to stay for 2 nights but checked out after one night and went elsewhere. The breakfast was great though and the staff were amonst the friendliest and helpful in a whole country full of friendly and helpful people. We stayed in better places for similar money, but the Turtle Inn is a real shame, because with a bit of TLC it would be a cracking little hotel.

The staff in this hotel were very helpful but the condition of our room was poor. The whole place smelt damp and musty. Our room decor was very tired and old. It was the worst place we stayed in during a two week trip. The annex looked much better.

The Turtle Inn reflected the quiet and serenity of Nikko with quiet rooms, lounge areas, and spas for single or "family" use. Internet access was provided for those that can't unplug (or just want to check the weather). My wife & I stayed one night in Nikko - which was sufficient during late winter/spring conditions. We didn't get a meal at the Hotel but maybe should have, since we stayed in Nikko on a Thursday on March 31st and all the restaurants seemed to be closed except for the Asian Garden by the Train Station (a bus ride away). The hotel, located adjacent the Daiyagawa river is walking distance to the major shrines. Across a bridge past the Turtle Inn Annex is a park with approximately 100 stone Buddhas (each with red cap). Our room cost was 9,000 Yen for one night, the room had a sink, and use of shared bathrooms. If returning to Nikko, I would stay at the Turtle Inn again.
