“Beautiful Location!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

This hotel was perfect for our one night getaway to the Hakone National Park area. Although the hallways reeked of distant times when smoking was the norm in Japanese hotels, our Western style room smelled beautiful and was pretty clean! We thought it was great that both the western and japanese style rooms were offered. The western style room includes two twin side beds separated by a nightstand, along with a private full bath. We really enjoyed the tea and cookies in the room, which also included a flat screen TV, refrigerator, and BEAUTIFUL view of the mountains and a peek at Lake Asti! We absolutely loved the onsen (hot tub pool) and wearing the yukatas found in our room. The onsen was incredibly relaxing and we received lots of guidance in English on the proper etiquette. The front desk staff was cordial and polite (as usual), and they spoke excellent English. The price was fairly steep for one of the cheapest hotels in Hakone ($100/per person for one night, plus a $20 infant fee for our baby), but it included a delicious grilled meat/seafood dinner and a breakfast buffet. Are cribs available for infants? That would be helpful next time we visit (and we'll be back :)

Room Tip: Western style rooms are on the top floor, where there is less noise :) Go into the onsen at the beg...

This is a basic hotel for Japanese nationals but open to anybody at a very reasonable rate. It is located furthest from Yumoto but very accessible by bus, rope way or by the lake ship. The dinner was great and the buffet breakfast was fantastic. The gender separated onsen bath is indoor only with a large view window. The rate was great for less than 10,000yen including two meals for a solo in a tatami room with toilet and the view of the lake. They also have full bath western bed rooms. The hotel property is large and quiet and good for evening & morning nature park strolling nearby. It is also barrier free(for wheel chair). I consider it is a gem in Hakone for it's value, food and nature surrounding.

They should at least have the Hotel name in English if they are trying to attract more customers. The bus stops right at the gate which is good if you can read Japanese. I requested a non smoking room & the room we were given was not only smelling of smoke but ash trays in the room - when we turned on the cooling because it was a particularly hot day the smell of smoke was even worse. I did not use the shower, around the taps were yucky, the carpet filthy and there was no way we would use the kettle for making a hot drink - it was full of floaty matter.
The bus terminal & Rope Car & Ferry are all just a short walk away. The evening meal traditional Japanese as we expected was plentiful & the breakfast was also very good.
If you are used to cleanliness I suggest you find alternative accommodation. We were not expecting anything special but for the price we at least expect cleanliness. We were in Japan for 14 days & found everthing else to be extremely clean. We were glad we had only allowed one night at Hakone Lake but to do the area justice you probably need two nights.

The Hakone LakeHotel sits on a hill overlooking Lake Ashi. If you arrive to the Togendai Station / Boat Dock by bus or via the Hakone Ropeway gondola cars or the sightseeing boat, the hotel is about a 2-minute walk up the road. This is the most inexpensive place we found in Hakone that had a nice lake view. We paid 8400 Yen per night per person, which includes a full Japanese evening dinner and an all-you-can-eat Japanese/American breakfast buffet. No credit card is needed to hold your reservation. We paid using a U.S. credit card at check-out. We reserved on the hotel's website. There is limited English in the emails and at the front desk. This hotel, called a National Lodge, is primarily meant for Japanese holiday-makers taking a break from nearby Tokyo. We were the only non-Japanese people staying there, but were always treated very well. They offer both Western and Japanese rooms, with a variety of meal plans - see their website pictures of meals. We opted for the traditional Japanese room, with tatami mats, sleeping on futons on the floor, and just one low table in the room. Our room had a in-room safe, small TV, phone, hot water pot for tea, and just a sink in the room. The shower room down the hall was part of the public bath facility. We were intimidated about proper protocols there, so just took sponge bath at our room sink. A speaker in your room announces Dinner at 6:00PM and Breakfast at 7:30AM. There is a coin-operated Internet computer in the lobby which charges 100 Yen for 10 minutes. There is plenty of parking in the lot in front of the hotel. I didn't make note if there was an elevator, but there are plenty of first floor rooms. Be sure to buy a Hakone Free Pass at Shinjuku or Odawara Station for train travel to/from Hakone and on almost all buses, railways, cable cars and gondola's in the Hakone area. Check the Odakyu website for details. If you have any questions on the Hakone area, the Odakyu Sightseeing Center in Shinjuku Station in Tokyo is very helpful.
