3rd hotel of our stay in Japan. Stayed one night in Gora Ichinoyu, and another night in Hakone-Ginyu for our 2 night ryokan experience in Hakone, and were not disappointed by either ryokan.
First - the bad: there is no shuttle to the ryokan from Gora station, so you either have to navigate a steep 15 minute uphill walk with your luggage, or take a cab that will reach the property in 2 minutes. We chose the latter and it was a good choice. Anyway, when booking the ryokan, management recommend we take a taxi instead of walking. Considering how cheap the ryokan was, the additional taxi fare was really not a big deal. Incidentally, going back to the train station on foot is not a problem at all as it is all downhill.
The room we got was a western style room, complete with ryokan style dinner and breakfast. The room was very big (or huge even, by Tokyo standards), and the beds were comfy.
The dinner and breakfast was really, really good. You eat in the common dining area with the rest of the ryokan guests, at a pre-designated table where the hotel staff would serve you your courses. It was nothing fancy but the food was delicious and prepared with sincerity.
Staff were helpful but English was at best decent. When we stayed, there were only 2 male staff attending to you at the reception, and who doubled as waiters during dinner and breakfast.
I don't believe the ryokan provides wi-fi, but they do provide a shared laptop for guests' use.
Bathrooms were good but my wife did say that after I showered (and soaked in the hot tub), her shower wasn't as hot as she would have liked it. Did I use up all the hot water for the room? I'm not sure about that one.
To summarize, this ryokan was not super luxurious, but it was comfortable, enjoyable and absolutely value for money. If you are on a budget, look no further. Gora Ichinoyu is perfect.
