“Very pleasant lay-over”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Stayed at this hotel for a lay-over on my trip from Detroit to Hangzhou, China. The bus from the airport to hotel was perfectly timed (as expected) and the bus driver handled all luggage.
The hotel is warm and inviting with friendly staff throughout. I recommend getting a room with a massage chair or get the Hawaiian style massage especially if you are coming off a long flight.
My room was very clean and there was little to no noise (very quiet).
The buffet style breakfast is a great start to the day.

Room Tip: Rooms with a massage chair are especially nice for travelers.

Reading some of the terrific reviews, I am a bit stumped but here are my thoughts. Most hotels near Narita airports are clean and service is usually very good as Japan prides itself on personal attention. I have stayed at many hotels near the airport and none seem to be low or high neither special or bad. As far as I am concerned, get a good price deal and stay there. I used to enjoy having a free buffet breakfast meal before I left but it was disappointing at Excel. The dinner buffet was overpriced and mediocre.

I needed to find a hotel near the airport for a one-night transit stay. Even though the reviews on this one were great, the very competitive low price (through hotels.com) caused me to wonder if there was something else I should know. Well, I found out: It is possible for an airport area hotel to offer great pricing and still offer details usually found in more centrally located establishments. Quietly efficient, smiling, and attentive personnel breezed me through check-in. I had heard that Japanese hotel rooms were on the smallish side and expected sparseness and very few, if any, walkable square feet in my single occupancy reservation. Not so! Even with a double bed, desk w/chair, side sitting chair and small table, there was more than enough room for me to stretch my legs. Didn't feel cramped in the least. Ah, the bed: I sank into its soft luxury and would have stayed there longer but for the plane I had to catch. The bathroom had all the basic necessities, including a toilet which kept me amused for a few moments as I figured out where the flushing handle was located (on the front side of the sink). The breakfast buffet (included in the room rate) was well-provisioned and attractively presented with an equal mix of Western and Japanese foods. There was something for everyone but the pickiest of eaters. I looked at the array as a wonderful opportunity to try something new. Huge windows overlook a tranquil water garden area which could be walked through. The host kindly extended the breakfast time by half an hour to give we tardy folks ample returns to the food area. All areas of the hotel I visited were very clean.

Due to a last minute change in plans we had to book a hotel near the Narita airport the night before our arrival in Japan. We were able to get a room through Expedia at a very good price. The free shuttle picked us up at the airport and took us on about a 10-minute drive to the hotel. The room for two was small but compact and efficient with little pluses like the use of robe and slippers, a large bathroom mirror that was fog-resistant in the area where one's face would reflect, and the best shower I've ever experienced in a hotel.

There was a well-stocked vending machine area on our floor that included beer as well as soda and Japanese drinks and snacks. The artwork on the walls of the lobby was attractive and out back there was a beautiful large Japanese garden with a fish pond (see photo).

For the price I expected this to be subpar. I was pleased to find this was an extremely nice hotel. I got the small double which was bigger than my big room in another Tokyo hotel. It's great for the airport. I got in late like 8pm and found the shuttle pic up in minutes without any previous research (thank you Japan for having such an intuitive and easy to use transportation system). It also had a very early shuttle, like 5:45am for a 7am flight.

We spent two nights in Japan before heading home to NYC and chose this hotel b/c of its proximity to the airport. The hotel in and of itself is very nice with restaurants, bar, gym, pool. They have reliable shuttle to the airport, mall and downtown Narita for touring. The Narita tourist sites are very nice and should not be missed. If you plan on going to Tokyo you can get there from this location but taking the shuttle to the airport or to downtown train stop to get there -- BUT -- it is anywhere from one hour to two hrs away. So its nice if you're spending one day in TOKYO but not as a base for Tokyo touring. The room was nice -- had a Queen size bed, robes, slippers, a lot of toiletries and free wifi in the room. I would stay in this hotel again.

ALSO -- Don't go out of your way to get the breakfast if you have a choice whether or not to include it in your room price. Its ok - but their version of Western breakfast isn't tasty -- they also have a Japanese version as well. You can always pick something up and keep it in the fridge in the room. Also -- the Hilton is directly across the street and you can use their shuttle as well if you miss Excel's.

Room Tip: Don't go out of your way to get the breakfast if you have a choice whether or not to include it...

The location and price of this hotel is very good. The rooms are bigger than you typical Japanese style room, and are very clean. The price is almost half of hotels downtown Tokyo, yet I feel these rooms offer more and are bigger. Theres eleven floors, a few bars and restaurants, an outdoor pool(which doesn't open till summer), indoor pool and fitness center. The lunch buffet is pricey at 2400 yen, but has good Japanese style cooked beef. Unfortunately, you cannot adjust the temperature in the room, so sometimes the room can get cold at night. At the very least, you will hear the fan running so it provides some noise in the background to help light sleepers sleep. The shuttle is a great service that takes you to a pretty good sized mall AEON and near the Naritasan temple.

Room Tip: Double check the shuttle schedules, sometimes the shuttle only stops at the temple stop and not the...
