This hotel is a genuine living legend. Vast, full of well heeled Japanese and busy, yet extraordinarily personalized service - and the staff's sense of anticipation just amazes you minute after minute. Frank Lloyd Wright ambiance in a restrained, somehow simple yet charming setting - with touches of Wright in the hallways, lobby, the great Peacock Room and a stunning and atmospheric Wright Suite (around US$4,500 a night!) , The "Imperial Floors" are expensive but your bathtub is drawn automatically, to music, and maintains a certain temperature, and our friends' room had its own mist sauna!!
Breakfast at the elegant Les Saisons, where they offer French toast from baguettes - to die for - is a stylish way to start a day in the heart of Tokyo, but not at all cheap. We liked Kamon, the teppanyaki place, with luscious Japanese beef steaks cooked right in front of you.
Some of the guests milling around the showplace lobby at The Imperial seemed just a little on the snobby side (Japanese and foreigners both) and the staff at times seemed almost too obliging (you kind of felt indebted all the time) - but the way they handle check-in, check-out, questions and problems, only the most refined Japanese could come up with this brand of service.
The place has an ambiance about it that oozes old Tokyo, yet the main part dates from 1970, I think. An odd, unusual, one of a kind and very special hotel - regal all the way. (Including prices!)
