“Great value, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2012

I travel to Japan regularly and Toyoko Inn is by far the most reliable place with the price that can't be beat. This Hakodate branch is located in the perfect area, right by the morning market and a 2-minute walk from the main station. The rooms are very comfortable by Japanese standard. Free internet in the lobby and forgettable breakfast. Hakodate is a wonderful city and was the highlight of our recent Japan trip.

For the amount paid, it is really value for money, especially if you are only going to be in your hotel room for sleeping. We paid less than SGD100 per room for one night. The room was really small but they had almost everything! It was amazing - open this wardrobe door and there's a pants presser; look under the desk and there's a humidifier; hair dryer, kettle, etc all packed neatly on the desk.

The location is fantastic as well - just across the road from the morning market! Breakfast at the hotel is also simple but filling - you could eat any amount of rice balls you want, with miso soup, pickles, seaweed, floss, tamago etc. Of course, don't eat too much if you're planning to get seafood at the market!

Highly recommended for its close proximity to the station and the market, and its price!

It was a great experience. Room is small but has everything needed including electric kettle and humidifier. Room is also clean. Bed is a little hard, but I slept okay. Location is excellent, 5 minutes walk from JR station and next to the morning market. Breakfast is also free and filling (it's japanese style breakfast with miso soup, rice balls, and pickles).

Finding the hotel: When you go through the ticket gates at Hakodate station turn right and go through that right exit (main exit is straight ahead to the bus station, but hotel is on the left). You will then see like two blocks away a high rise building with blue Japanese signs at the top. The first sign is the same like the first sign of Tokyo. This is the the Toyoko inn. When you go there you pass along a road with fish restaurants and little shops left and right. The Hotel entrace will have English signs.

Stayed alone one night in room type B. The toyoko inn budget hotels are found all across Japan. This one comes with all the usuall featues: Close to the station, small but very efficient room, free internet, including laptops in the lobby, free breakfast (mainly japanese rise balls, bread and jam, orange juice, coffee, tea, soup), low price.

The room has also a humidifier, japanese kettle with green and plum tea, Japanese pyjama, storage under the bed ("high clearance"), bathroom amenities. The room is very small, so is the bathroom, but OK for one person due to good design. Room has air conditioning. A very few hangers. During the day there is a market between the station and the hotel.

My two problems: 1. There was a quartz clock at the wall that ticked quite noisy. 2. There is no lugguage storage room - they only offered to deposit the lugguage in the corner in the lobby after check-out. In Japan, lugguage storage is normally well organized.

I would still stay there again - just great value to stay the night .

No frills. Dingy but clean room. Bathroom small but clean. The Toyoko Inns we've stayed in have all been close to the train station and functional. This is no exception. You don't want to spend any time in the room and it is just a place to rest your head for the night. But the price is pretty compelling especially for such a short stay. The good news is that the hotel is a few minutes walk from the old warehouse district along the harbour which has a great selection of dining and shopping opportunities.

I stayed in this hotel on Jun 1-2 '09 with my husband. It's extremely convenient as it was only a couple of minutes walk away from the JR Hakodate train station.

The hotel itself is clean and quite new-looking and the front-counter staff are very helpful. They spoke enough English for us to understand and were very accomodating. This hotel is classed as business-type hotel and so it has free internet access in the lobby (+ 3 computers for anyone who didn't bring theirs).

The hotel includes breakfast consisting of different types of onigiri (rice balls), miso soup, some types of pickles, orange juice and tea. Quite a change from the standard tea and toast breaky.

The room is small and clean(a little cramp!) but extremely efficient in terms of space usage. For example, the wash basin and bath both use the same faucet. With just a simple turn of a knob, the water gets redirected to the bath area. Really neat.

There are night-gowns and slippers provided and also a kettle and humidifier in the room. Another cool idea.

Location of this hotel is good as it is near the touristy shopping area and also near the train station and main bus-stop. It is also right next to the Morning Fish market and so if you need to eat sashimi, it's just next door. Don't worry as there is really no smell and the Japanese wash the entire area daily after they close shop for the day.
