“An interesting view of samurai life”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

The castle is quite interesting as it shows how the samurai would have protected themselves from attacks. I have rarely found such an old, wooden building which you can walk around it. This one allows you to walk all the way to the very top floor, although it is a pretty steep walk and not recommended for people who trip or fall easily! I did not understand the fact that this attraction is aimed at international guests as well but you will find almost no English so many/most of the exhibits are left to your own imagination as to what they are and were used for etc.

“One Japanese castle unlike the others”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

At first I have to say, that I really love Japanese castles, also the insides are often really tiny. Before I visit a Japanese castle, I don't have any expectations. Because usually you can't see anything in the inside and also the look to the outside is usually really bad. But.... after visiting Osaka castle, Matsumoto castle, Inuyama castle, Nagoya castle, Nijou castle and Himeji castle, I was really surprised, that Matsue castle is a really impressive and unlike the others.
Himeji castle is really beautiful too, but the museum inside it wasn't really good.
The museum and the exhibition inside Matsue castle are big and informative. You could see many exhibitions pieces. Compared to other castles the inside was quite big and the ceiling of the rooms was height. It was quite bright inside and on the tower I had an amazing view in all directions through really big windows. In other castels I never had such a nice view. But there were sadly not many English descriptions.

“Very interesting castle to see and explore.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

Unique castle with interesting artefacts inside. There is a hidden level which cannot be seen from outside. The top floor offers a great lookout of the surrounding area.

“Amazing castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

An amazing castle with beautiful surroundigs. I actually expected it to be more crowded because it was Saturday, but it wasn't at all. I could freely enjoy walking around the complex and climb the tower without any haste. The view from the top of the main tower was great! Matsue has so much nature, so it was so nice to see a city almost wthout skyscrapers, small islands surrounded by lakes and the mountains in the background.

“Beautiful Castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

One cannot go to Matsue and not go to Matsue Castle. Matsue Castle was a wonderful experience. The inside of the castle is like a museum where samurai helmet, armor and other relics are on display. Each floor of the castle is connected by steeeeeep stairs. Luckily each set of stair is fairly short and it is surprisingly less scary to climb down them than to climb up. The top floor of the castle sports a panoramic view of Matsue. I thought it would be a nice place to propose to someone, just in case anyone reading this was in that sort of situation. The Matsue Castle grounds were expansive and my friend and I spotted a...ninja? I couldn't snap a picture of him because he was running off somewhere, typical ninja business I guess.
