“great place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2011

I recently stayed here for the night with my husband. My sister and family stayed in the other room (there are only 2 rental rooms). It was the most unique lodging experience I have ever had! The owner is really nice and more than willing to tell you about the history of the building and even show you around - we got a full tour! It was a very cold night (early December) and they do not heat the entire place, but our room/bed were very toasty - there are space heaters and bed warmers which we actually turned down because it was so warm. I was a little apprehensive about staying in a castle because my thought at first would be that it is creepy/haunted but I was not creeped out at all. Despite the fact that it is chilly in the hallway it was otherwise cozy and not scary in the least. I would highly recommend it. there truly is nowhere else to stay in Amsterdam NY - if you are familiar with the area you know there isn't much for lodging there. I have family in this area and would definitely stay here again the next time I am in town and I am sure my sister would too - it was very cool to have the whole place to ourselves! There is a 10,000 sq foot gymnasium that the kids played in (scooters, bikes, balls, etc) and they had a blast. There was a pool table you can also use. Right across the street there is an excellent Italian restaurant that I also highly recommend. Overall it was a great, positive experience!

My wife & I selected The Castle as a "stop over" on our recent travel to Syracuse. We were very glad that we did.
The Onwer is very helpful & friendly.
The Castle, a former National Guard Amory, is most unsual. The transistion from its former use into a B&B has been very tastefully done. If you like cosy, historic buildings with great windows and lots of comfort; The Castle is for you.

This is a truly unique place to stay. This old Armory has been in the process of renovation and conversion for about 10 years. The Bed & Breakfast rooms are unusually spacious and well decorated. We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing stay. There isn't much else to see or do in Amsterdam, but staying in "The Castle" is a destination in itself. It is a great/quiet place for couples.

Room Tip: Very Good Italian restaurant is less than a block away.

We were in town for an event and the family whom runs this B&B was on vacation. To make sure we would have a comfortable stay in Amsterdam they made arrangments for someone to care for the home while we were there. This was delightful. Our room was incredibly spacious and comfortable, an extra bit of relaxation.

We made our first trip to Glimmerglass Festival (Opera) this year. Tried to book in Cooperstown with no luck - all places in town or on the lake required 2 night minimum stay. BUT HOORAY - we found the Castle! I'm not going to go on about the history - former armory, only one in the state in private hands as a family residence + B&B. Most impressive were the proprietors, their happy daughter, their friendly dog Pumpkin Pie, the delicious pancakes, and, of course, the Castle itself. How many B&Bs have a full size basketball court ? Your own sitting room and dining room and bedroom? A shower that could hold all the Celtics standing on each other's shoulders and still not reach the ceiling? Two baby squirrels in a nest right outside your window? I could go on, on, and on, but do yourself a favor and book yourself in for any trip upstate, especially for college tours (Skidmore, Hamilton, Colgate, etc) or a trip on the Erie Canal.

My fiance and I stayed here for two nights as part of our honeymoon road trip. Manfred was so kind and helpful. He helped us with our bags and served us a delicious breakfast. We stayed in the Westlake Wing and were impressed with the decor and comfort of the room. We would definitely stay here again!

We stayed again at the Castle - this time in the summer. Only to prove that every season here has its beauty, but the innkeepers are constant in their striving to offer the best there is - from the nice landscape that meets you outside to the continuous rennovations inside! We have seen the Christmas clad of the Castle and brought some friends with us this time to enjoy the summer time! Were we in for a treat! Susan was as friendly as always - showing us the rennovated Gym and the new furnishings in the Officer's Wing; The breakfast was awesome using local eggs and products in the true spirit of the Innkeepers involvement with sustainability and "locavore" culture! I hope more business people follow their example - in preservation and conservation! Thank you for your hospitality again!
