The restaurant is located in a small alley about 5 minutes away by foot from Matsumoto Castle and from the hotel where we were staying (Marunouchi Matsumoto). We ended up going for lunch and dinner during our stay.
This place serves different sorts of soba (zaru soba which is soba that you dip it sauce and is their specialty, cold broth soba and hot broth soba). They also have a nice set of side dishes to enjoy. A very good point as well is that they have a full English menu which is well drafted (a rarity in Japan).
For lunch, my wife and I had the zaru soba with tempura (you can choose between a normal set or a large set, the normal set is already quite enough). The tempura was very good, not too oily. The soba noodles were very tasty. One very nice aspect is that they give you a wasabi root for you to grate your wasabi to put in the dipping sauce. We also had two side dishes: soba gaki which is a form of soba paste that you dip in soy sauce, with some wasabi and daikon and mushrooms which are served with daikon as well. Both were very good.
For dinner, my wife had a hot broth soba with mountain vegetables, which was very tasty, and I had a cold broth soba with grated yam. A very unusual experience but very good and definitely one to try if you've already had other forms of soba. We had a side dish of marinated herring that was incredible.
Service was nice and attentive. They always explained what we were supposed to do with the different ingredients on the table (like the wasabi to grate for instance).
They also have a shop if you want to bring back some soba noodles or a wasabi root.
