We spent the last week of our recent Japan trip driving around central Honshu staying in a different Ryokan every night. Each of them was special in its own way, but Wanosato may have been our favorite. It's tucked away next to a beautiful stream on a country road outside Takayama. I doubt we would have found it without GPS. When they showed us to our room our jaws dropped. First, the room was quite spacious compared to other Ryokans. It was more like a suite of four connecting rooms (an entry room, a tea room, a sleeping room and a sitting room). The tea room and sitting rooms had large glass windows overlooking the forest. The stream is just a few feet away and it was delightful to sit and watch the water pass by our window. The food and service were excellent as well. We were there in winter and it was quite cold outside. They do not heat the public areas at the Ryokan in the winter so be prepared to wear a jacket when you leave your room. The shared onsen on the lower level was well-maintained and a joy to use. I sincerely hope I am able to return to this delightful spot in the future. It would be hard to recommend it more highly. A very special experience.
