“great ryokan experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2010

I was concerned how the place will be after reading some of the review here, but we went during the spring festival and had problem finding a place, so we took it as it is. But, we are very pleasantly surprised! The room was HUGE - it had a bedroom and a living room parts, tea, heating, a space next to the window with chairs, bathroom and toilet - huge, compared to many Japanese hotels; The place was very clean!
The hot tub was also good.

The staff - great! friendly! meals - very very good! If you want to have sake in the room, they will bring you. Always smiling and helpful!

They have a great collection of small statuettes, that were bought by the grandmother of the owner - an absolute collection.
When we were leaving, we were given a small Japanese bag (hand made by the mother of the owner). The owners and the staff were simply incredible!
The stay at the ryokan was one of the best experiences.

I strongly recommend the place!

weather was quite cold for the time of year but the welcome was very warm. Room was typical tatami mats etc and meals were taken in a private dining room which was very nice. All the facilities were on offer, internet, TV and the hot bath which was excellent. Noone in when we went so had the bath to ourself. You do not stay here for the view but the people. They even ran us to the station when we left as it was raining. If you are looking for the traditional inn then this is a good one.

On our two weeks tour around Japan we decided to stay once at a ryokan and booked in advance for two nights incl breakfast and dinner. We hoped for a genuine japanese experience.
Although high season, the ryokan seemed to us to be empty on the first night: we were the only one at the onsen and did not see any other guests in the entire hotel. Also, we were the only once having dinner in a private room. So, the numerous neatly placed outdoor shoes at the entrance looked to us to be placed by the staff.

- Service/Food: We were very much looking forward to a wonderful dinner including fresh Hida beef and other speciality of the region. What we then recieved as a Kaiseki dinner was everything else: so we ended up leaving the plates have full.
At the second day a japanese group was staying at the ryokan and had dinner at the same time like us - very interestingly, the quality of the food was enourmesly higher than the day before. Now the served dinner was eatable! This experience seemed to us like the ryokan was not interested in prepearing a deasent meal for western tourists - very shameful!

- Room: We totally missed the warm athmosphere as mentioned on their homepage. In our room there was just a neon light.

We can't compare to other ryokans, but for an other time we will definitely choose a hotel instead. All in all a very basic stay in a totally overpriced ryokan!

The friendly english speaking staff was a nice welcome to our stay in Takayama. This is an older ryokan with the necessary modern ammenities. Our room was quite big and we had western style bathroom. I especially liked that the rooms were smoke free and they had free computer internet. The food was amazing as they used local ingredients for their kaiseki dinner and breakfast.

We were able to walk to the ryokan from the JR station. It was about a 10-15 minute walk. I felt very safe in the city of Takayama and even took a morning jog around town before businesses opened. It's also walking distance (10 mins) to the morning market.

We had booked in this Ryokan, following the advice of Lonely Planet (French Edition).
As soon as we set foot in this place we were disapointed: disordered reception, chipped
paint on the walls, worn out carpet.
Then we were shown our room which was at the same poor level standard: old furniture,
antic bathroom, urine smelling toilets !
At about 31 500 Yens (+ taxes) a rooms for 2 (including dinner and breakfast), it was not
acceptable.
We said so to the owner who is by the way a very nice person and we went
searching for another Ryokan (see my comments on Ryokan Tanabe)

Asunaro ryokan is a short walk from Takayama station. The ryokan is in a suburban area of Takyama, not that pretty but its a relatively short walk to the old part of town. The service at Asunaro was great, the owner is very friendly. The rooms are fairly basic but clean, however its not the prettiest or most traditional ryokan we stayed at. We didn't bother with using our shower, rather we used the onsen instead which was fine though a little run down. The traditional dinner was good and we enjoyed the local Hida steak very much. However I think Asunaro is quite expensive given the standard of the accommodation.
