“Good Location, Comfortable Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014

My partner and I went from Yokohama to Takayama by train on 21 March, and stayed in the Best Western as part of a Japan Railways package. I love snow but my partner hates it, and we arrived at the hotel in the last throes of winter.
The hotel is about a minute's walk from the station, but we arrived way too early for check in. We toured the town, which is lovely, in a raging blizzard. We could only stand it for so long so we went to the hotel, still before check in time, with the intention of sitting in the lobby for a while. There was a lovely lady behind reception who, to cut a long story short, got the manager's nod for us to check in early.
The room was quite small but clean and comfortable, and the bathroom was well-appointed. The breakfast next morning was good too, with enough selection to satisfy most people, I would think. All things considered, I wouldn't have any hesitation in staying there again. Some very interesting places around Takayama that we didn't get chance to visit this time around, and I want to go again and, yes, stay at the Best Western.

The hotel is probably one of the nicer hotels in Takayama. Good rooms and great location. The hotel is very close to the train station (3 minutes walk). All that Takayama has to offer is within walking distance. Recommend visiting the morning market and old town. Breakfast selection is a bit limited. Try to get a room on the top floor.

Service was great. Front desk staff speak reasonably good English and were very helpful.

If you would like to visit an Onsen, go the the Associa hotel. It was a spectacular view over the mountains and Takayama with its 5th and 7th floor onsen. It costs 1150 yen. A free hotel shuttle bus leaves from the train station every hour. Ask the front desk to confirm times.

Room Tip: Top floor room

Takayama is a very lovely, quiet historic town. 2 days aren't enough, wish we had spend more days there, exploring the different part of the town.
Shop close early around 9pm but there is a fairly large Family Mart opposite the station that you can get all your drinks, snacks there.
There is a lovely Tebby Bear Museum within a 10 mins taxi ride from the hotel and while you are there, walk another 10 mins to the Hida Folk Village.

Location
A few mins walk from JR Takayama train station which is really ideal after a long 2.5 hrs train ride from Nagoya. There were little eateries around, we simply hop into any of them and the food is satisfying. Not forgetting the must try hida beef. I book a half day tour to Shirakawa-Go from isite Takayama and pick up is right from the hotel door step. I find the room a little dark for reading thou. It's within walking distance to the morning market, the iconic red Nakabashi Bridge and the old town.

Service
Excellent and helpful service from the staff.

Room
Rooms are clean, modern and of reasonable size, at least sufficient space to open 2 luggages. A electric kettle is available for boiling hot water to make tea. There was a note to say that the tap water is natural spring water and indeed it taste fresh and crisp! Bath tub is full size with full set of toiletries. Free WIFI is available. I appreciate there is a little compartment above the pillow with an electrical socket that you could charge your device or simply leave the light on. They also have a little corner with 2 armchairs and table for you to rest.

Breakfast
We had one breakfast in the hotel as we leave early for a day trip, it was Y1200 per person. They serve both Continental and Japanese breakfast in separate lounges and you're welcome to bring food across the lounge. Continental breakfast is the usual sausages, eggs, bacon, croissants, cereals and bread. The Japanese breakfast is lovely with pickled vegetables, fluffy pearl rice, warm miso soup etc.

Nice rooms, clean, well placed close to station. But avoid the restaurant, we were not sure if they knew whar they were doing. In principle they did the right things but there was something lacking. Language skills, knowhow on how to run arestaurant... can recommend the hotell but avoid using the restaurant.

Although the room was small and we were given a twin when we were expecting a double (not the fault of the hotel), the room was fine, the staff were very helpful and the hotel is in a good location, very close to the train station and an easy walk to the wonderful historic district of Takayama. The breakfast was good, too. Recommended.

Takayama is a wonderfully walkable city, and this hotel was perfectly placed on a quiet street close to the main train station as well as restaurants (turn to your right out of the hotel, nothing on the left...) and sites. The hallways and rooms are very modern and clean. They felt quite luxurious, though compact.

The breakfast buffet was great, lots and lots of Western and Japanese options.

The staff are polite, though not overly friendly or helpful. We had more luck at the tourist info booth at the train station than from the front desk. They were also very strict on the 3pm check-in time, though they were kind enough to keep our laptop bags in their back office instead of in the lobby with the other suitcases.

Whether you stay at this hotel or another, Takayama is an awesome place and definitely worth a visit!

The Best Western Hotel Takayama is an easy three minute walk from the train station in a very central location of the town. Our hotel room was very attractive and relatively large by Japanese standards. It had a large picture window with a great view of the Japanese Alps, all covered with snow during our stay in February. The hotel room had a large TV, small fridge, electric kettle, cups, tea bags, instant coffee, etc. The bathroom was a good size with a full size bath with shower over it. Overall, the room was very comfortable and well equipped.

Breakfast was not included in the price we paid for the room and so we paid on arrival for breakfast for every morning of our stay. It was a little disappointing with cold eggs served most mornings and few vegetarian options.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights and the price averaged £85 per night. Overall, the hotel was very good, the staff were professional, it was extremely convenient and attractive and we would stay there again.
