“A lovely change from Japanese food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Loved our meal here and the room as quaint and cosy on a winters night. Portions are small but fresh and tasty. It is a small restaurant so get here early!

“Mexican food cooked with LOVE!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

Food:
Cooked with love! I ordered the quesadillas (small, 3pieces), chicken enchiladas(small), and chilli prawns, all for myself to eat! Quantity was too much for me but I finished it anyhow and was happily stuffed! ALL DISHES WERE YUMMMMMMYYYYY and cooked on the spot in front of you.

Price: all came up to 1680yen. VERY reasonable for the quality of food, and in Japan, these prices can't be beat.

Service: Kato-San was very passionate about Mexican cuisine, and his love is demonstrated by the attention he gives to his food while cooking, and how he explains very precisely, with a tattered map, all the places he's been to in Mexico! He speaks excellent Spanish too.

He tries his utmost best to communicate with me in Eng and is veryyyyy down-to-earth, which is something I really appreciated. There are no airs about him and I really enjoyed talking to him for the whole time I was there (1.5hrs).

I must say it'd be a shame if u don't visit CHAPALA when you are in Takayama :) would visit AGAIN!!!!!

Tip: it doesn't open in the day, and is closed on Sundays. Go at about 630pm.

“Don't leave Takayama without visiting the Chapala!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012 via mobile

A refreshing evening away from Japanese food!! We had a great evening and enjoyed the food which was very reasonably priced. It was the best meal we had in Japan! The owner was super friendly and we had a great conversation with him which added to our fantastic and fun evening at Chapala!!

“Very good food and not too expensive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

We had trouble finding the place as we couldn't find it's website. They seem to close for dinner on Sundays. The mexican food was excellent and a good break from Japanese food.

“A small part of mexico also in Takayama”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

This small restaurant in Takayama brings Mexico in Japan at least his owner try to do that. He do everying, he takes the orders, he cookes, serves and at the end washes the dishes. He' a one man show. The food is not like the real mexican food of course, but I never expected to find this medium quality here in japan at a really reasonable price. There aren't so many seats, but the atmosphere is really nice. If you want something different from the usual japanese food for just one night, well this is a very good choice.
