“Our first stay at a ryokan....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013 via mobile

Our time in Takayama was fantastic due to our stay at honjinhiranoya. We arrived to the welcome 'gong', naoko looked after us, gave us socks, toothbrushes, afternoon tea with food which was appreciated after our long train ride. Diner was well....interesting, Japanese which didn't really suit my friend but we had our own room and felt very special. Everyone who works there could not have helped us more. Breakfast was good, American style. Last night we had sashimi, it was sensational and we were interactive with the chefs, had the most unbelievable salmon sushi specially made for us. We couldn't recommend this place more highly....go...go...go!

Loved the location, the service, the food, the experience & atmosphere. Something special for every foreigner visiting Japan. I've stay in many hotels all around asia, but a japanese style is simply something different. I was traveling with my older parents and the staff tried to make our stay as pleasant as possible.

24 hours was all it took for us to fall in love with this Inn and this city: Beautiful Cherry Blossoms in full bloom throughout the city, shops of all kinds and higher quality than many of the other touristy areas we had visited, and two of the most authentic and tasty Japanese meals (keiseki) that we could imagine. A few minutes in the hot tub (onsen) and slept like a baby on tatami mats with luxurious down bedding....very cozy.

Luxury from A to Z. You are being met at the station by a chauffeur driven limousine. The room is spacious and well equipped. You get your Japanese dresses, ready to go to the public bath on the ground floor. Dinner is sensational as is breakfast. It's a bit costly, but worth its while.

Room Tip: Any Kachoan room is excellent

We spent 1 romantic day at the hotel and had a fairly good time.
The room was rather nice, dinner and breakfast were very nice and all staff members were so kind.
We could feel Japanese service style that is comfortable.
Our stay was a very good experience, which we can warmly recommend.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2009

We stayed at the Katchoan for two nights on 13th & 14th October. My wife has an allergy to feathers so hotel (and particularly ryokan ) visits present fairly significant hurdles to hoteliers – in this area the Kachoan couldn’t have been more obliging. A small bus collected us from the station and after check in from the friendly staff we were shown to our room. Unfortunately there were still some feather products in the room so once we indicated this they immediately offered to move us to another room, cleaned it thoroughly and left it with an air filter system running – we were both grateful and impressed.

The Kachoan (and sister Bekkan across the road) are both modern ryokan and as newish built actually meant it was better in terms of my wife’s allergy. That said it is both stylish and beautiful. Having lived in Japan (and specifically in a fairly high end onsen village) you can certainly get higher quality (and price!) establishments in Japan but we found the Kachoan to be very good value. The rooms, lobby, dining area and baths were very clean and well managed. The service was always available, polite, obliging and efficient – we had to ask for new top sheets at midnight and they organised it within 10 mins!

The Kachoan baths are on the ground floor and accessed via the lobby which is perfectly normal for a communal bath in a hotel, however Kachoan guests may also use the sister hotel Bekkan’s baths located on the 7th floor overlooking the river and well worth the visit. Bekkan guest unfortunately may not use the Kachoans. I believe this is due to the fact that the Kachoan is a more costly hotel than the Bekkan.

The Kaiseki meals at night are taken in the 2nd floor dining section. We had some reservations at first as we expected it to be served in the room but actually it is set up like a whole series of private little ‘houses’ and quite charming. The food was absolutely wonderful and I could not fault it. You can choose either western or Japanese breakfast and both are filling and excellent quality and value.

To most westerners I think the price of ryokan seem quite steep but if one considers the quality of room, level of service, full banquet dining for 2 meals, spa baths etc then actually I believe it is easy to see it as quite good value and this hotel ticks all of those boxes for me.

Finally the Kachoan could not be better located to offer both proximity to all of the sights of central Takayama and yet remained a calm and quiet retreat from the day.
