“Excellent value rivaling Toyoko Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2012

In a nutshell, for about the same amount of money you'd pay at Toyoko Inn, you can get a similar experience and a bit more value out of your money by staying here.

High points:
-Rooms use card keys, meaning you don't have to check in your key every time you leave (common at business hotels in Japan)
-A bit of a subtle point, but the shower faucet is one of the TOTO temperature set ones as opposed to typical hot/cold faucet type; usually see the temperature type at higher end hotels
-Modern rooms with thick bedding, smaller sized flat screen TV
-Free WIFI and LAN Internet
-Located in a quieter part of Sakae with lots of local fast food places around; just about a 7 minute walk to the main shopping area
-Relatively late check-out time of 11:00

Low points:
-As another reviewer had mentioned, room had a considerable cigarette smoke smell, in spite of being a non-smoking room; hotel does provide each room with a bottle of something like Febreze
-Though room furnishings seem relatively new, the bathroom looks a bit worn and dated
-Doors are made of metal, which get can quite nosy with neighbors coming in and out and when the maids start their work in the morning
-No free breakfast unlike Toyoko Inn; there is a buffet breakfast that looked pretty good with a big selection, but I didn't try it and it seemed a bit pricey at 1100/1300JPY

On my most recent trip to Nagoya, I had stayed at the Tokyu Hotel across the street. While that experience was far superior in many ways, this hotel was less than half the price (rates for single rooms seem to hover around 3500JPY to 7000JPY depending on day/season), but I felt like I was getting a bit more than I paid for.

“Room with Cigarette Smoke”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2010

Hotel conveniently located near eartery places and shopping malls. Although it is next to a highway and cross junction, the room is quiet if the window is closed. Only 2 lifts available and it's small. Cause a little trouble for group travellers with lotz luggage. Room reeked of cigarette smoke even after 1 whole bottle of purifier was used. Even tried opening the windows to let the smoke out but the smell still linger in the room. Bathroom design is weird. It's like a box inside the room. Room was just nice for 2 pax. No place to put the luggage open on the floor. Gota put it on the bed. Loves the yukata & shower ameities provided. B'fast was ok but limited choices. The map provided for tourist for nearby attractions is in Japanese. It will be great if English version is provided.

Opposite the hotel there's Pachinko. Those Japanese casino type where small metal balls are played. Must give it a try. Next to it it's Lawson, a 24hr store. 10min walk and there's the Nagoya city underground mall. But shops closed very early like 8pm. There's KTV and Cinema theatre nearby & quite crowded at night.

“Decent Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2005

I found it difficult to find information on this hotel before my trip, so I will leave this review for future travellers. The Kanaya Nagoya is a business hotel that is right across the street from the Nagoya Tokyu hotel. It is not in the same class as the Tokyu, but it is decent for the price. My room was very small but adequate; small bed, desk, full length mirror, TV, bring your own pillow if possible. The bathroom was likewise small but the water pressure in the shower was excellent considreing I was on the 9th floor. Cabs to/from the airport are very expensive (13,000 yen I believe($130)), however there is an airport bus that leaves from the Tokyu hotel right across the street for only 1,100 yen ($11), and I found the almost empty bus to be much more comfortable than the cab. The staff was very helpful giving me directions and tips about the city. Although they spoke limited English, they were extremely helpful since I spoke no Japanese. There is a restaurant in the lobby, however I did not eat there, it appeared to be American themed. All in all it was a nice place in a busy area and a great staff.
