“An expensive but delicious experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

Take note that there are 2 Atsuta Horaiken at Matsuzakaya Department Store. The B1 basement at the main building is a take-away one whereas this is the sit-in dining experince at the South Building 10F. We started to go there at 6pm, but already have to wait about 10 minutes before being seated in our street-wear. Once seated, there is written instruction in English how to enjoy the Atsuta's patented hitsumabushi. The 2nd method which is the wasabi and seaweed mix with the unagi and rice was a fantastic experience. The unagi was very delicious and not soggy despite the delicious seasoning. The hitsumabushi costs 3600 yen and that left a gigantic crater in my wallet. There is even an 5100 yen "extra size" one. Next time, I will bring an extra size wallet before stepping into this place again.

“What is the real Unagi?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014

This is the real one.

I went there 30 mins ago before it started.
I wasn't the first person in the cue.
It became really crowded in 30mins with more than 30-50people.

Just go there a bit earlier if you don't have anything to do.

It is not cheap. But it is worth it. I will have this even though it is more expensive.

“Worth the trip, eel with a difference”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2014 via mobile

We had eel lunch at another well recommended restaurant just a day before in Kyoto and hesitated to do the same again so soon in Nagoya. But trip advisor reviews suggest that unagi in Nagoya is really quite different and for sure it is. At Atsuta it's definitely worth to try their special set - comes with instructions how to best enjoy it. We went at about 3pm and so while it was still very crowded there was no queue waiting to get in. By itself the eel is incredibly tender, a lot less "teriyaki" seasoning found in unagi meals in so many places and the freshness of the eel really comes out obviously. Throughly enjoyable.

“Eel that melts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2013

It's the best eel I have ever had, even I amn't eel's lover. The waitress gave us the 'How to' eat the rice+eel. It's interesting and delicious, worth to try and pamper yourself with this at the end of the day before getting rest at the hotel. The location is convenient to access, right on the 10th floor of Matsuzakaya department store in Sakae.

“Made us Americans feel like family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

My husband and I have eaten at restaurants all over Honshu and as far south as Kumumoto. This is one of the very best meals we have had in a restaurant. Of course we were the only westerners, but no worries, they had the seat backs for us and even offered my husband a fork ( he didn't need it). The Unagi was terrific. Service was impeccable and it was very nice that there was an English menu so my husband did not have to go to the front of the restaurant to point at his meal. MY husband had an assortment of fish and he was very pleased.

It is a 15 minute cab ride from the Marriott and well worth the fare. In fact it was raining so they called us a cab and helped us out with unbrellas.
