“Expo 2005 Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2005

We just returned from a 72 hour visit to Nagoya. Including 2 full days at the 2005 Expo. It was a excellent experience. Definitely worth the trip. So good in fact my wife and 16 year old son are returning in July. I believe that two days is about the limit of human endurance for this kind of experience. We flew in on American from Chicago. Centrair airport is a brand new world class full service airport and is operating quite well. We caught the first train into Nagoya and it happened to be the local which stopped at every station(about 20!). The express leaves at 02 and 32 after the hour but it is not a great savings to wait since there is one track in each direction and I don't think they pass each other. If you arrive in between you just wait for the fast one or enjoy the stops on the way. Fare is about $9.
We stayed at the Gamagori Quality Inn and I would recommend it highly. Big rooms for Japan. Excellent breakfast but not included in room rate. I would be sure to find out if included when checking in since Quality Inns lists continental as included. Beautiful views from breakfast room. Hotel is right on the JR Tokaido line at the Mikawa Miya station. It is just across tracks from station about 100 yards. Train to Expo is via Okazaki which is pretty fast then the Aichi Loop which is slower because it stops at every station. We were concerned the first day about finding the right stop. When we reached Banpaku Yakusa where you get off for the short Linimo ride the whole train stood up at once and got off. What a shock! We took an Expo special bus the second day and it was faster. There are lots of options for transportation and they all are up to the usual Japanese standards for efficiency.
Big, big, big line at security in the morning. US TSA level inspection. No plastic bottles allowed. There were lines for everything but everybody was nice and things overall went very smoothly. Country pavilions were excellent. I think we averaged 2 per hour and it is amazing how each gave a solid feel for their culture in that amount of time. The Korea pavilion was excellent. Japans main pavilion took 70 minutes but the experience of travel thru the earth has to be done to be believed. The USA holds its own with Ben Franklin but requires a second TSA level security screening. Argentina has a really good Tango show. I think we experienced about half of the country exhibits and they alone were worth the trip. Each was unique and special in that countries own way. Mexico, Poland, Ireland, Turkey, Cuba and all the rest, each had much to give. The exhibits are all aimed at the Japanese since that appears to be 99% of audience but English was always available. We only did the Toshiba corporate exhibit because the lines were very long but from all indications they were all excellent, no one appeared disappointed and I know they spent a lot of time waiting to get in. People just gushed about the Toyoto exhibit.
Outside of the exhibits I didn’t see a lot of non-Japanese cultural performances but there were lots of Japanese parade type stuff. Floats, etc. The were lots of food booths but generally Japanese versions of the worlds foods. Overall, I believe it would be a mistake for anyone to pass up the opportunity to experience this worlds fair but be prepared for human exhaustion.
