There is a reason why Hakam and via Jordan win such glowing reviews: and that is his personal touch on ensuring both a satisfying visit of Petra but also the insights that Hakam provides not only of ancient sites, but of the education of what and who Jordan is to those of us who too often group Jordan with other, less stable countries in the region.
The first step of putting you at ease is when you cross the border solo from Eilat, Israel to find a smiling face waiting for you on a bench with a yellow badge. Hakam helps check you into a clean, humble but very acceptable 3 star hotel, and then provides a personal tour of Aqaba and sights southward to show off his proud city.
Hakam was very flexible in starting off very early for my "one day" in Petra and we engaged in a wide range of topics on the 2 1/2 hour drive to Petra. Upon arrival, Hakam had arranged a personal tour guide as part of our pre-arranged agreement. Our local guide was a young, enthusiastic gentleman with lots of information, although his talking pace was a bit hard to keep up with and thus some information was not easily absorbed for people who were not as familiar with the rich history that Petra has to offer.
However, after the guide exited 2 hours later, Hakam was incredibly gracious in showing me many more sights that were bypassed, and he could easily be your personal tour guide for the whole day, although he is very humble. Petra is so much more than "The Treasury" made famous by Indiana Jones and it is imperative you have a guide to show you the best photographic locations.
After touring Petra for 5-6 hours, Hakam can take you to a great "lunch" in a nearby restaurant which has an excellent buffet.
On our way back, Hakam accommodated my curiosity on a wide range of topics I was curious about regarding lifestyle, challenges of Jordanian people, tourism, politics, natural resources, transportation...whatever you want to know. He absolutely loves his job, and loves his customers.
Finally, Hakam will ensure you are taken to the border, all official "stamps" accounted for, and see you on your way. While my schedule only allowed for a single full day, I can say I was fully satisfied and would highly recommend via Jordan to any tourist wishing to see any and all parts of Jordan.
I'll be back....
