My wife and I used Chanters Lodge as a base for five nights while touring Victoria Falls and Chobe Game Park. We chose Chanters after reading reviews on TripAdvisor and our experience exceeded expectations. The room was air-conditioned, clean, and comfortable. We enjoyed beginning each day with a delicious English Breakfast. The evening meals were supurb. My wife ate the curried chicken twice and I enjoyed the Zambian perch. We also enjoyed sampling Zambian cuisine under "safe" conditions. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful and Richard, the owner, was always eager to provide invaluable assistance with transfers, recommendations, etc.
Ideal stay for a couple; quiet clean airconditioned room. Relaxing place. Transportation on arrival and on the day of departure. Immediate and precise assistance when organizing our trip from Lusaka to Livingstone and tours around Livingstone. Our special thanks for the food to the chef. It was really delicious. The breakfast was substantial giving us energy for walking through the whole day. We spend there one week collecting only good memories. I was amazed what a budget traveller can get with his money. And best of all, my wife was pleased with me when choosing this accommodation.
We, a team of 12 people, who had just completed 2 weeks of humanitarian work in Northern Zambia were pleasantly surprised to arrive and find the lodge that we had booked from home, (under a very tight budget ), more than we expected. The rooms were clean and spacious, each with air conditioning and its own bathroom. The garden was lovely with a gazebo for shade, chairs and tables for sitting about and the pool a refreshing pleasure. The breakfast included in the room cost provided a good number of choices and was nicely prepared and presented. Meals can be eaten inside or outside on a covered patio. The Lunch and Dinner menu is quite extensive and for the most part, the food was tasty and nicely prepared for Zambian standards.
The staff is friendly and effecient and Mr. Chanters was very helpful and accomodating to our needs. The Lodge is about a 15 minute walk to town centre whereby you pass a busy market that was excellent for souvenir shopping.
Lodging: Very basic and outdated rooms. The air conditioning worked fine, and it was good to have mosquito nets over the beds. 2-3 television channels in the rooms, but you aren't in Zambia to watch TV.
Restaurant: Food was not great and overpriced, and the menu did not represent what they had in stock (there were no beans, no mushrooms, no fries). The free breakfast was quite limited, given the lack of availability of certain foods.
Staff: Richard was a pleasure to be around, and was very concerned that guests were comfortable. It was a great perk to be picked up and dropped off at the airport.
Facilities: Simple but comfortable. There were fresh flowers in the restaurant. The garden was very nice, with fountains and flowering trees and plants, and a small, pretty swimming pool.
Overall: We did not want to pay $400-$500 per night to stay in the hotels right at Victoria Falls, so chose this as a budget option. It was adequate for the price, but do not expect anything but very basic lodging.
Tip: DON'T FORGET TO BRING US DOLLARS ($$$) WITH YOU TO ZAMBIA -- YOU WILL NEED THEM TO BUY YOUR VISA TO GET INTO THE COUNTRY. YOU WILL SPEND $$ IN LIVINGSTONE RATHER THAN ANY OTHER CURRENCY.
