“Unfriendly to the extreme”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

The Zambezi Waterfront has a beautiful view over the Zambezi River and a fine location close to the Victoria Falls - otherwise this horrible hotel wouldn't be able to attract clients. I wonder if the staff has been educated in the former USSR...? I've never experienced more arrogant and unfriendly hotel employees than here. They deliberately turned their backs when we showed up in the reception, they only changed our money with utmost reluctance, and of course they didn't offer their help carrying the luggage to and from the room. Have you ever heard of the concept 'service', guys? Don't go there - and don't eat at their restaurant. I had the chewiest steak of my life there!

I firstly stayed in the campsite, which was nice, with good bathroom facilities. I then had a chalet for 2 nights, which was very nice, but for someone that hates spiders - not ideal! It had a thatched roof, therefore there were lots! At least the bed had a mosquito net around it - slightly better feeling!! Also, you had to walk through hords of monkeys to get to your room, and they can be suprisingly scary and vicious!!
Breakfast was good, with a nice variety. Two swimming pools, both nice sizes with loungers, but be careful of the snakes! The bar area is really nice and relaxing, with stunning views of the Zambezi river - the sunset is just so so nice. Bar food is nice, and quite good prices. Good tourist centre, where you can book various tours and experiences, although very expensive. Staff helpful throughout. Location isn't ideal unless you have a car.

Dear Sarah,
Thank you so much for taking the time to review our property.
I am happy to see that you enjoyed your stay with us and enjoyed our grounds.
Regarding the Spiders we are getting rid of them - as much as we can - in the rooms. Unfortunately we cannot get rid of them outside as they are in their natural habitat but do not let them make their home in our rooms. The monkey's are cheeky and are interesting to watch but we do tell our guests to stay away from them and we try and get them off the property as much as we can but they always come back as they know food is around.
We do also provide a shuttle into town and the Falls - which can be requested at reception - if you do not have a car.
We hope to see you back soon with us.
Kind regards
The staff at The Zambezi Waterfront and Safari Par Excellence

Our room was on the second floor overlooking the Zambezi river and the hotel was in a very convenient location for local excursions. There is a tour office on site. It's not a top of the line place, but the rooms were clean and the restaurant okay. Water flow in the shower was problematic at times. Take a flashlight because power outages were common. Bug spray a must. Definitely do not feed the monkeys as they can become aggressive. A sunset cruise is a must, but don't bother with paying more for a "dinner cruise" because dinner is probably not as much as one might expect for the price. Highly recommend the rhino walk, both to see these few remaining amazing animals and to support the guides protecting the rhinos 24 / 7. Microlight flight over Victoria Falls a must do, though pricy, as it will be one of the best 15 minutes of your life. The elephant safari is fun, and also supports their efforts in conservation.

Livingstone was fairly booked on hotels but we got a room looking out onto the water, right on the bank of the river. It was fairly expensive, but it was nice to have the privacy and be able to relax, sit on our lanai and watch elephants and hippo in the river.
The room was about $200 a night and it only had a fan, no central air. We wished that they would have had screens on the french doors, so we could leave the doors open. They do spray for mosquitos and it wasn't too bad.
The staff was helpful and they had internet in the restaurant.

Room Tip: There are only a few rooms that sit right on the river, but they are the best.

We are glad to see that you also enjoyed your view of the Zambezi River - the Riverside rooms are the best.

We look forward to welcoming you here at The Waterfront again.

This lodge is located directly on the Zambezi and a $10 cab ride into town or to the Falls. The permanent tents and chalets are nice. On my last night there, 4 of us ate at the restaurant and the food wasn't bad. We asked to order twice before our order was taken, and it took 45 minutes to get the bill when we finished. We ended up having to stand at the counter in order to pay. In the bathroom of the restaurant after our meal I watched a guy from the kitchen come in, use the bathroom and go straight back to the kitchen without washing his hands. Through four countries and over a month of traveling through Africa I never got sick, and the next day all four of us that ate there did.
The wi fi there is quite expensive, and very slow. It took me 35 minutes to log into my email, send an e-mail of what time my flight was leaving, and log out.
I think there are better options in Livingstone for a similar price.

We stayed in a tent for a week, but had the luxury of using the facilities in a family member's waterfront room which made things a lot easier. The shared facilities for tenters are fine, hot showers, very clean, but mosquitoes are rife.

The tents have comfortable beds, but are also mosquito infested. We got a mosquito net at Shoprite in town for about $10 USD, which easily tied to the ceiling of our tent, and greatly improved the experience. No fans in the tents either, but actually the temperature at night was perfect, just don't try to nap in a tent during the day or you will melt. Our tent area was surprisingly quiet, as most people seem to be asleep by 10pm. The only thing that disturbed our sleep were the birds and monkeys, not a bad thing to wake up to.

The bar/restaurant area is fantastic, overlooking the zambezi and a bit of wildlife, as well as a very cold (this is a good thing), clean pool. Drinks are cheap, meals are decent and large, priced on average around $7-$9 USD. Again, mosquitoes were the only complaint, but only a problem at the restaurant in the evening. Make sure you bring spray!

Grab a taxi to town for around 40,000 Kwacha ($8 USD) and stock up on supplies at Shoprite, where you can also get cash out at a Barclays or eat some delicious Italian food at Olgas, Mexican at Fez Bar, or African and Caribbean food at Zambezi Cafe across the road. The lodge free shuttle will also drop you here if you ask, rather than taking you in to the town centre.

The place is overrun with vervet monkeys, and can be a little agro at times but sometimes very cute and mostly just fascinating. Don't leave anything outside your tent because they will steal it (even your makeup). There is also a resident crocodile living in the pond, and we were lucky enough to have a herd of elephants visit the outskirts of the property one afternoon.

Overall it was a very relaxing, fun experience that didn't break the bank. Highly recommended.

Dear LivvRose,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write about your experience at The Zambezi Waterfront.
We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. We do strive to give you the best service as well as keeping our facilities clean and enjoyable to use.

You did mention that you found the mosquitos a little bit too much and it is an on going battle we have with them. We fumigate the bathrooms, tents and rooms on a regular basis but unfortunately these little creatures do come back. The battle continues........

You don't have to be a millionaire to enjoy the setting of The Zambezi Waterfront, you are right in saying that it doesn't break the budget, and the views of the Zambezi River.

Once again, thank you very much for your review as we do appreciate all the feedback.
We look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Kind regards
The Staff at The Zambezi Waterfront and Safari Par Excellence.

We stayed here in April 2012 and had an absolute blast! The reasonably priced accommodation allowed us to do a range of activities with the spare cash. The bar is quiet popular with the locals, made friends with the bartender. If you are coming to Zambia for adventure, can fight off cheeky monkeys and don’t mind a cold shower every now and again, then this is the place for you. I will defiantly visit here again in dry season!

Dear Jackie L,

As the Victoria Falls area is known as the "Adventure Capital of Africa" we wanted to make sure that ALL travellers had the opportunity to come and stay in reasonable priced accommodation and to enjoy the various adventure activities on offer without breaking the bank. We are pleased that we are able to offer than here at The Waterfront.
You are correct in saying that the bar is a great place to meet new people and make new friends. It has been known as the best bar on the Zambezi River and I am sure you can see why.
