After 16 grueling hours from the US to Joberg and spending just one night at a Protea hotel long enough to get a few winks and a shower, we were ready to make land at our first destination in Africa.
Having never been on the Dark Continent, we were ready for just about anything having read on line the gamut of lodging types available.
Waterberry Lodge is a gem in my opinion. We were met promptly at the airport by a very gracious porter/driver and were safely whisked away from the taxi sharks circling the arrival gates.
A very nice drive one hour (more or less) up the road and a first view of Zebras and a couple of Elephants was truly enchanting. We were treated to our first "African massage" driving down the sandy road to the Waterberry. My chiropractor will be forever indebted to the African Sand!
Upon arrival, unlike American lodges and hotels, we were greeted by staff that took our bags and carry-ons, unburdening us of the distresses of traveling with no wheels due to the bush planes we would be joining later in our trip. Claudia warmly greeted us and had a very refreshing beverage awaiting our parched throats and a fresh wet towel to wipe the dust from the road trip.
We were given a tour of the lodge, some does and don't concerning being in the wild-bush, and were introduced to "high tea". We took to our room, freshened up with no hurried time, and made for the dock just in time to catch the sunset cruise. Beautiful start to our Waterberry visit.
Dinners were delicious, food was tailored to my wife's needs (food allergy of cilantro), and even though the nights were fresh (wife said chilly) the innovative charcoal heaters and the bush fire made up for it. I don't go on holiday so much for the food as for the adventure of it all, but I must say there was not a dish that didn't get finished with clean plates, Sister Mary would be proud of us both! There was an overly adequate menu, plus adult beverages were easily and quickly fetched. Never did one have to go on a mission to find a staff member of the Waterberry. A huge plus!
The rooms were above high marks with very comfortable bedding, mosquito nets (not needed), electric heating blankets (needed as it was winter), bathrobes, plenty of clean fresh towels, remarkably spotless tile floors (I have a UV light when traveling), a spotless loo shower and sink. A plus, as I am later to miss, is the power. The rooms at the Waterberry Lodge have full 220 power not 12vt, and my wife was pleased as punch, since she could blow dry her hair. The rooms came complete with luxurious soap gel, high end shampoo and conditioner. Bottled water was made available daily if needed.
The Waterberry has plenty of activities on campus, but we decided to take in Vic Falls, go river fishing with a lodge guide, and the missus did a canoe safari. Remember our holidays are for the adventures not so much for relaxing, yet we seem to get plenty of relax time in. For the activities we did, Claudia was our savior. Claudia set up all the tickets, transfers, lunches, everything. She left nothing to chance including the catapult, to ward off evil baboons.
Claudia and her staff were just wonderful. Please consider the Waterberry Lodge as one of your destinations when visiting Africa, or if Paul Tyler with ATR should recommend this lodge to you. You, as I, will not be at all disappointed.
