“DISAPPOINTING, COULD SO EASILY BE A FIVE STAR”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2014

We booked this villa for some relaxation time after visiting other parts of Vietnam and was really looking forward to resting on a beautiful beach and romantic meals over looking the sea.Booked ocean view, not much of a view where our villa was. We was very disappointed, after spending more to stay here than any of the hotels during our trip to Vietnam. The villas were fine although too large for just the two of us, comfortable and clean. The lack of facilities in the kitchen didn't bother us as i had no intention of cooking, though i can see this would be a problem for families. Despite 3 bathrooms ,only one had a shower and as the water didn't drain away quickly, the next person to use the bath room, had to wade through water.
The things that really bothered me were no outside furniture, so having your own pool was pointless when you couldn't sit in the sun and dry off afterwards. The outside bath was dirty so we never used it and the beds on the beach had no mattresses or cushions, so you had to lay on a hard wood bed. The beach was beautiful and clean and laying on it should have bean heavenly, but just ended up being a test of endurance because the beds were so
uncomfortable. Also the restaurant was over priced for the food you got and drinks were very expensive, double what we paid for beer any where else. They new you couldn't just walk to another bar as nowhere else to go for a drink. We ended up getting taxi's into Da nang most nights rather than stay and spend money in the restaurant getting ripped off for drink prices and eating mediocre food.
The frustrating thing about this place is that for relatively small out lay and a small reduction in drinks prices, this place would easily get five stars. Just some outside garden furniture, some padding on the sun beds and i would have been more than happy. I also would have spent a lot more in the restaurant and bar if i didn't feel i was being over charged. The location really is lovely and the staff were friendly and helpful. There also was a free shuttle bus into Da nang leaving at 9am and returning 4pm, which was a nice touch.
If i went to Da nang again i would stay in the city or near the main beaches where there are nice comfy sun loungers and large selections of bars and good eating places.
Da nang was a fun place to go out in the evening, and i would recommend Rachels bar/restaurant on Bach Dang street, very good food and excellent English speaking staff, and 17 Saloon bar for live music and fun atmosphere. Also don't miss the fire breathing dragon bridge at 9pm on Saturday nights.
Stay at Son Tra resort for beautiful location, but stock up on beer and food supplies before hand and take inflatable lilo's for comfort to lay on when outside.

Room Tip: Beach front would be best

We we're excited to book this villa which provided a quiet time on our trip throughout Vietnam. The villa is quite nice and has lots of space. We booked an ocean view two bedroom villa as we are travelling with two young children. It was on the expensive side for Vietnam but felt it would be worth it. The villa itself is nicely built and has some nice amenities but there are some things missing from it being worth the money we spent. The kitchen doesn't have any pots or pans so at best you can boil water in the kettle and microwave something. Seems strange to have a full kitchen but without any equipment. There are two outdoor bathtubs which seem beautiful and romantic but one doesn't have any water flow to it and the other which is in full view of all walking by hadn't been cleaned in what appeared to be months and was full of green plant growth. The showers in the bathrooms didn't drain quickly which meant that the water flowed over the edges and into the main part of the bathroom. One of the air conditioners in the main sitting room leaked condensation onto the couch below making it wet to sit on at times. The outdoor private pool is very nice and the kids had a wonderful time swimming all day. The sun was on the pool most of the day. Unfortunately there were no chairs or loungers by the private pool. When we called reception to have some chairs delivered they said they couldn't bring any as they were for the guests to use by the beach. This would make sense to me if there were many guests at the resort but there were only two or three other villas rented while we were there so they surely could bring us chairs. Eventually they brought us one lounger. There is a seating area near the private pool but it's cement and there are no cushions so it would be very uncomfortable to sit there.

The beach area is very nice, secluded and not too wavy. There is a volleyball net and some kayaks with life jackets that you can use if you like. There is some shade to sit under as well. The pool near the restaurant is nice and clean and has different depths. the restaurant is disappointing. It's very expensive for what you get. The menu seems limited compared to other places in Vietnam. In other resorts and cities we were eating for about $10-20 per meal for four people including beer and pop depending on the city and type of restaurant. Here they overcharge for beverages, 48,000 VND for a beer which in other places cost 10,000 for a larger bottle. I understand mark up, but this is outrageous. The food is average at best. I had a fried rice dish which included a chicken leg and thigh on there bone with too much rice ( at least a two cup serving) and it cost 100,000 VND. Again, elsewhere we would have paid half this amount. If the food was excellent I would be happy to pay these prices but as it is basic and nothing spectacular I wasn't happy. We went to a seafood restaurant about 200 m down the road ( towards town) and had a very nice meal. We paid 750,000 ( comparable to the hotel restaurant) but had a fresh snapper that we chose from a tank grilled mixed greens, rice and fresh salad, two beers and two pops. The meal was freshly prepared and cooked by the local family making it much more appealing.

Overall this resort is nice but needs some cosmetic work...paint needs touch ups, some grungy bathroom tiles etc. The restaurant is a real negative. We ended up going into town and purchasing some baguettes and sandwich fillings as well as beer, wine and pop. We ate lunch in our villa ( had to purchase a knife) and quite enjoyed the sandwiches!

Would I return? Probably not as there are many choices for resorts in Vietnam. Would I recommend it to others? Yes, but make sure you stock up at the BIG C supermarket and be prepared to pay lots of money for average food in the restaurant. When we were there, the resort was almost empty. Only two to three other families were seen each day.

The staff were very nice, friendly and accommodating. I suspect they realize that the resort is not doing well due to the cost.

Great place to quietly relax in the sun . 20 minutes drive from the hotel strip in Da Nang and much more to my liking. Very spacious villas at a reasonable rate. Each with private swimming pool.
Only one restaurant/bar with decent food/drinks. Buffet breakfast is good. Staff is attentive and good natured. We returned from a day trip to Hoi An to find a beautiful birthday cake for my wife in our villa!
We initially booked only a single night through Agoda so we could check it out and have stayed another 3 nights so far.......
If you are looking for the most new and immaculate hotel with easy access to shopping and
restaurants this is not your choice. Hotel is probably 10 years old and there is some wear and tear due to age and the salt air such as sticking doors rusting hardware etc., more like a vacation rental or home away from home.
For me it is perfect!

Room Tip: Beachfront Villa is the obvious first choice

This was a beautiful, peaceful sanctuary after whole family being sick for several days in Hanoi (see earlier review). We had checked out the reviews and most were from late last year, we knew there was availability on booking.com so went straight out there from airport and had a look first. We were very warmly greeted and had a lovely cold glass of mango or peach juice while they checked availability then showed us around.
Apartment was huge! A home away from home. Beautiful French, colonial influenced architecture with polished wood floors downstairs and all window trimmings in wood. Living area with balcony upstairs and 2bdrms downstairs with adjoining conservatory room btwn bdrms. French doors to your own pool and secluded stairs to beach access. Fluffy white dressing gowns in the cupboard and lovely thick white towels in the bathroom. Bathroom was a bit musty smelling and evidence of typhoon damage in apartment which is just devastating as you can really see how hard all staff are working to repair areas throughout the resort. Eg, little lanterns missing from entrance to some villas but every day there was another villas lights put in or the wiring was freshly done and you could really see them working towards getting things back up to the standard they were before the typhoon. New towel rails and new toilets, obviously replaced after typhoon but I think the fact that this resort is not all 'brand new' adds to the charm of the place. It's certainly not old fashioned, it has everything you need. very clean and we all loved the peppermint smelling shower/bath soap. Cot was bought downstairs with no trouble from housekeeping and room service was easy and very good. All staff were very happy and pleasant, grounds staff and lifeguard always smiled hello even though no english. Restaurant food was delicious and our children were well looked after with cushions to prop them up and balloons! Breakfast selection was plentiful and varied, hot and cold, cereal, usual bacon and eggs etc and cold meats and salads. Beach front was delightful. Was a bit worried about pool cleanliness as I couldn't smell chlorine or see any pump or filter working but next morning the pool guy was there and the jets were working and he was cleaning it all as you would expect. As we hadn't booked, they weren't expecting us I guess. Lovely place to stay, loved our own private pool and the slightly larger main pool, beach was beautiful and as another reviewer said... Going to bed at night with sound of the waves just outside your door is just delightful! Must take care with small children as LOTS of open water areas especially private pools right outside your door.

Room Tip: Beachfront is lovely and sou d of waves is gorgeous!

Son Tra resort is located on the Son Tra Peninsula, Da Nang, Vietnam. It is located on a picturesque, private beach, surrounded my Monkey Mountain (yes you can see monkeys while there). Although it does not have a fitness center, every villa has a full kitchen, a private swimming pool and outdoor bath tubs. The resteraunt is OK, the people are very nice and getting to a good place to eat in Da Nang is easy by cab. The spa is superb and by any standards is very affordable.

Room Tip: We had a two bedroom, two bath villa, it was very big!

I echo earlier adviser on 2 BR unit. It is huge but only has one shower which makes it inconvenient for couples. Other than that place is great. Son Tra is nice with a secluded beach. I did not go swimming as a little chilly for me. The staff is very helpful to recommend sites or schedule trips for you. I recommend going to beach restaurant next door for authentic romantic seafood dinner. It is run by local family so food is cheap. As you face the ocean it is to the right of resort. I actually walked on rocks across to other property or can go up the hill next door and walk down to restaurant. There is also a huge Buddhist Temple with large statue visible I recommend. Sorry can't remember restaurant or temple name.

We rented the 2 BR unit and it was enormous. The only oddity of the unit was the fact that there are 3 bathrooms, but only one shower. The beach was beautiful even though we were unfortunate as the typhoon hit last week and damaged the area. The breakfast buffet was very good. Eggs or omelets made to order and Asian noodle soups. Great values.
