“a gem of an oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2010

Spent 3 nights at this home stay, away from the hussle and bussle. Staff could not be more helpful and endeavoured to cater to all our needs. Rooms were large, clean and set in a beautiful garden. We were invited to a delicious dinner with the owner and enjoyed the local cuisine. The walk into town is an easy walk on footpaths or can be made via a lovely promenade by the river. Staff is able to organise bus tickets, tours, drivers and have a comprehensive knowledge of the area. They show personal care and interest in each guest.

we stayed here for almost a week, with a baby and a 9 year old.

On the down side the family room which we had first smelt of mould, even the subsequent rooms had a faint mould smell in the wardrobes- perhaps a thorough clean might help. Also, on check-out the bill was very confusing and rushed as breakfast had been served unusally slowly and they only let us pay a little on the credit card even though they charged us the banking fee's- very unusual and even a little suspicious. The pool was a little green, but did get cleaned whilst there- and of course is not really a pool.

On the up side- staff were wonderful, very friendly and great with the children, making our stay very relaxed indeed. The second room was lovely. The gardens stunning and a nice respite. It was a great place to be with with kids and not at all too far from the town, especially with the bikes, but we often stolled in. The beach is a little further but still a bike ride away or a cheap taxi. The best thing however, was the food. It was great. Always good, fresh and tasty.

I think this is a great place to stay but is a little overpriced for this accomadation in Vietnam but give it a try overnight at least.

It is common for the web presence of a hotel to be, shall we say, a little rose coloured. However, this is not the case for the Vuon Trau Family resort (Betel Garden Homestay). This establishment exceeded our expectations. It is indeed a small (only seven rooms), serene oasis.
The rooms are spacious, clean, and equipped with substantial and high quality furniture. The bathrooms are up to scratch (and large). We booked connecting rooms which was an ideal solution regarding travelling with two young teenage/tweeny girls.
The landscaping is immaculate, shady and welcoming. Instead of a restaurant, tables are scattered in the garden and on patios of the rooms. The food is great. We very much enjoyed the a la carte breakfasts (inclusive with room rate), and also some really high quality lunchs and dinners, which were similar in price to nearby restaurants. The highly cost-effective mini-bar was an occasional life-saver after a hard day at the tailors. We took a cooking class that included shopping at the central market. It was fun as well as instructive. Our family were the only clients that day, so it was personalised to our interests and preferences.
Alice (age 11) : " I learnt lots of new things about Vietnamese food and I found the rice pancakes a bit tricky but I got lots of help from the friendly chef."
This was our first visit to Hoi An, so we were not sure how well the location would work. However, by bike, which was included in room rate, it was a leisurely ride, less than 10 minutes, to the Old Town and 20 minutes to Cua Dai Beach. It is also a short stroll to Cua Dai Road which has no shortage of tourist-oriented businesses, and a short stroll in the other direction to the river. The path along the river is a "scenic route" for getting into town.
The staff are friendly, efficient and chatty, and make the homestay experience different and, for us, better than the standard hotel experience. For example, some staff (Hi Hien!) took the trouble to give us real help with our rudimentary Vietnamese phrases.
We experienced a booking glitch, and the management worked very hard to successfully fix the problem. We had to stay elsewhere for our first few days in Hoi An, but we shifted to Vuon Trau for a seven day stay as soon as we could, and are very pleased that we did.
Finally, the little "freebies" - the laundry service, the previously mentioned bicycles, fresh fruit in the rooms, the family dinner, and even a short river cruise made an already enjoyable experience even more memorable.

We can not say enough about the lovely staff and the beautiful environment of Betel Garden. We spent a week here though we had only intended to stay three days. The staff did everything possible to make our stay relaxing and enjoyable. We loved being a bit out of town, away from the other tourists. Bikes are provided and we often rode through the outlying neighborhoods, and consequently, got a real feel for the day to day culture of Vietnam. Betel Garden is close enough to town to walk, and right on the way to the beach for an easy bike ride. This is a must stay place if you are going to Hoi An. If you like to cook, think about taking the cooking class they offer. It was a highlight for us.

We stayed 3 nights in the connecting rooms next to the small pool.

The homestay is a peaceful retreat from charming but busy Hoi An, with lovely gardens and a small pool. It is a short walk from Hoi An although we took taxis which were plentiful and cheap.

The rooms are large, private and nicely furnished with an excellent value mini bar! Guests eat at tables dotted around the garden and we were delighted to be able to put our 2 small children to bed and eat peacefully outside! The food is some of the best Vietnamese food we tasted! Try the banana flower salad and the crispy wontons!

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and as we stayed 3 nights we were invited to eat with the manager and a family member along with some other very nice guests on our last night which gave us an interesting insight into Vietnamese life and culture.

Would love to return to Hoi An and would definitely stay at Betel Garden Homestay!

Our family stayed at Betel Garden Homestay for 3 nights in March 2010. From the moment we arrived, the staff was very attentive to our needs. We were assigned to the room by the resort's small pool, which delighted our daughter, since it seemed like our own private pool. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The resort is located an easy 10-15 minutes' walk from Hoi An, which we did twice a day although bikes are available for guests' use as well. The staff arranged a tour to My Son for us, which was no more expensive than had we gone through any of the tour shops in town. Since we stayed for 3 nights, we were invited to a meal with the family, a nice gesture and a chance to learn more about them and Vietnamese culture. The grounds are well manicured and make Betel Garden Homestay a relaxing oasis away from the bustle of Hoi An proper.
