I had decided that after some heavy travelling in the north of Vietnam I needed a rest. So I booked the hotel for a week, thinking to enjoy the beach as well as a little culture.
I also booked a Danang airport pick-up through the hotel to take out the hassle of arriving after a long day of travelling.
After arriving at the Danang airport there was no sign of any driver. Fortunately I had a mobile phone and the number of the hotel. The first person that picked up the phone did not speak any English and kept me on hold for a long time. After explaining the problem the woman told me she would check. I gave them 15 minutes to sort things and called again. The lady said that the driver had gotten the time wrong and would be on his way. So, he arrived only 40 minutes later. Not a good start!
My room was spacious - but with a particular unpleasant smell to it that I could not locate. I discussed this with the reception and we agreed that if the smell would not go away by the next day they would give me a different room. The smell was still the same, so I switched rooms - only to find out that the smell in that room was the same. So, I sniffed out the room like a hound - and found out that the smell came from the bed sheets. Towels in the bathroom smelled absolutely normal - but I don't know what they used to wash or impregnate the linen. I still have this unpleasant strong smell in my nose that I had to endure a whole week when I think of this.
Beds were encased by a protruding wooden frame. This resulted in hitting my shins (on both legs) several times, sometimes quite hard - and always at the same height. Now, several weeks later you can still see the marks these encounters left and it still hurts a little :)
Buffet breakfast was below average. Items were not fresh but "re-planted" for days in a row. Buffet was not replenished and if one showed up at 9 am - bad luck. The chafing dishes were also not refuelled and went cold by 7am. So, I made sure to have my breakfast shortly after 6am :)
The small swimming pool is on the second floor and in a concrete enclosure. Not inspiring and certainly not inviting to spend extended time there. The only time I used it I saw a staff member take one of the pool towels, wipe the sweat off his face and put the towel back!
I did not use the massage facilities of the Spa as there are a few massage places along the road, basically steps away from the hotel, at much lower prices.
The out-of-town location did not bother me as I rented a motorbike for a week on the next morning after my arrival.
I had bad luck with the beach as, during my entire stay, it was very windy and the surf was to strong to enjoy swimming. There were also some heavy currents that made me paddle quite a bit not to be swept to god knows where. But that was not the hotel's fault :)
I should say, the view from the rooftop restaurant (where breakfast is served) is very beautiful.
I did come to peace with all the shortcomings of the hotel - apart from the smell of the linen, which alone is a reason for me never to come back. The truth is that if I would not have made the mistake of prepaying for a whole week I would have checked-out earlier.
