The Hoi An Trails Resort is a lovely hotel, positioning itself somewhere between boutique and mainstream and situated about a 10 minute drive from the historic town of Hoi An. I stayed here with my wife for four nights at the end of April, beginning of May 2010.
As a hotel, we had very few complaints. Our room was towards the back of the hotel's grounds and done out in a Japanese theme. As well as the main entrance to the room, we had a separate door which opened up to a small patio area which looked out on to a lily pond and beyond that the hotel's pool. The room itself was very comfortable if somewhat dark, due to all the dark wood, however we found that quite charming. The bathroom was perfect, though the open shower left the floor a little wet at times.
As with every hotel in Vietnam, the staff couldn't do enough for us, spoke English well enough to hold a conversation and couldn't have been more attentive. We would have a drink in the bar at night, but only ate breakfast at the hotel, which, if you got there a little late, wasn't all that plentiful, or appetizing.
The hotel suggested that the centre of Hoi An is walkable from the hotel, however that's not the case, especially when coupled with the heat and humidity. Instead, they do provide regular shuttle runs to the main coach park of the city and we never had any problems getting one there, or back. We took a cab a couple of times and these were very cheap, which meant that the location never proved a problem for us. Some guests didn't share this attitude, however being slightly out of town meant that the hotel had bigger grounds and wasn't as busy as some of those closer to the centre of the action.
One comment I would make is that the paddy field next door was currently in the process of being burnt, which, at times, mean smoke would waft through to the hotel.
As a destination, Hoi An is a must-see for any traveller to Vietnam. Steeped in history and still clearly authentic, this place certainly hasn't been tarred with the communist concrete brush that has swept through many cities in the country. There are plenty of tailors to choose from in the city and the prices are surprisingly reasonable - under £100 for a three piece suit, made-to-measure and ready in 24 hours.
We booked a trip through the hotel to the My Son ruins, which, despite being a 4am start, was one of the highlights of our time in Vietnam. The trip was easy, comfortable and despite the promised breakfast being a bread roll with some cheese and a bottle of water on a street corner, was very memorable and definitely worth the money.
There are a number of restaurants near to the hotel, which offer beautiful local cuisine at extremely reasonable prices. There is one to the left and across the road from the hotel, which we went to twice, it was that good.
The beach is about a 20 minute walk, heading left out of the hotel's main entrance. We realised about 10 minutes in though, that we should have really taken up the offer of the free bicycle rental from the hotel! The beach itself is very clean and not at all busy.
Overall, a great hotel at a very reasonable price. We felt like we really soaked up everything the place had to offer and in reality, could have stayed here a lot longer.
