“Not so great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2009

The hotel is located between downtown Hoi An and the beach. The room we got was OK, but there was a door in to the neighboring room, which made it quite easy to overhear what our neighbours was talking about and doing.
The fruit basket was not much of a basket (see pic). The swimming pool was very nice, and so was the breakfast. We rented bikes to get to the beach. Some of the staff was very helpful, while others never seemed to be very interested in the guests. Average hotel with swimmingpool, but a bit to far from center of Hoi An.

We stayed here for 3 days in May and found that the staff were helpful and very friendly. While our upgraded deluxe villa was a nice large room the lighting at night time was rather dim (we like to read in bed at night!), the towels were thin and tiny (good towels can make or break a room!) and the free breakfast was merely adequate, nothing to write home about. Having said that, we felt very welcome there, we had fresh fruit nearly every day in the room, the swimming pool was extremely welcome after a hard day's sightseeing and shopping and was right outside our room, the a/c worked very well and there was free Internet in the lobby (just don't expect to get anything printed, we never could). Loved the free shuttle into Old Town - that's a very nice service. All in all, a pleasant place to stay, they just need to work on a few little things to make this a great stay.

Admittedly, I was a bit dubious about booking this hotel (90% of hotels were booked online or via e-mails) and it wasn't my original chioce. Well, I am so glad that myself and 21yo step-daughter did stay at this hotel.

The surrounding area is typical of the "out-of-town" places within VietNam, and certainly does not to the hotel any justice. However, the Phuong Nam Hotel (aka Southern Hotel & Villas) is a little oasis, and being a little way out of town serves it's purpose....sooo QUIET!

We stayed in a fancier than standard room, which was clean, had comfortable beds, adequate furnishings and a good sized, clean bathroom. To us it was faultless, although we don't try "all" the facilities and inspect "every part" of the room for flaws or dirt. The air-con, fridge, TV etc all worked fine and our room even had a DVD player.

The pool area is as good as the photo's on the internet and it was a great delight to swim / relax in the pool at night, without the noise of downtown HoiAn and the ever familiar "beep-beep" of vehicles.

The "restaurant / bar" areas are very relaxed with only modest seating, but it has a complimentary pool table for guest use. The meals were OK and nothing to rave on about, as with the breakfast buffet (typical VietNam style buffet for tourists - cereals / pastries / toast / eggs / condiments / juices etc). Breakfast is served on the second floor (via a small flight of stairs....VietNam, always with the stairs!!) and looks out over the pool area and a visually unimpressive back lot. Get there early for the best (full) choices and a balcony table over-looking the pool.

The free hotel shuttle to and from HoiAn works well, is air-conditioned (though directly pointing the vents at your persons to optimise the coolness) and relatively on time. It's less than five minutes to HoiAn via the shuttle bus, and even less on the return journey due to a different, direct route. In the town, it stops outside Phuom Nam Southern Silk (which is owned by the hotel), which is also where it departs for it's return journey. (NB: My 21yo step-daughter shopped / got clothes made like crazy from several places within HoiAn, and the Phuong Nam Southern Silk got the "2-thumbs up" for their service, quality and price - helps staying at the hotel methinks?)

Throughout VietNam we used a private tour guide from The Real Kangaroo Cafe (18 Bao Khanh Street, HaNoi [--]) and didn't investigate any tour services or bus/train bookings etc. Though going by their competent and professional reception staff, I'm sure it would've been good and well-priced.

The free computers and internet service was efficient and seem to be free of any nasties, although being savvy with computers helps eliminate some of the potential problems.

Overall, this hotel exceeded all expectations and we would both definately recommend these premises to any future traveller to HoiAn. The price for what we received and the services rendered were very good and in my opinion a bargain. We will be visiting this part of VietNam in 2010 after passing through Cambodia and you will find us both staying here again - promise!

Being from a hospitality background (many years ago), I can be fussy and very picky about hotels, their services, cleanliness and professionalism and this hotel passed easily, and that this review is an honest unrejudice one.

this place, while slightly out of the center of hoi an, offers excellent value. the rooms were very aesthetically pleasing, the beds were quite comfortable for vietnam and the staff was helpful. having a pool was a nice perk.

Now there is a swimming pool and new bedrooms with two VIP rooms. The rooms can not support the needs. I hope some day the hotel expand more rooms.

My boyfriend and I booked one of the cheapest rooms at 24 US$ a night and got a lot more than we expected. And we assume that the bungalows and villas are probably even nicer.

The room was clean and had nice beds (pillows were a bit big and bouncy though). There were chairs, a desk, a little wooden sofa, a big wardrobe, aircon and a mini bar. Unfortunately no safety box. Fast free wifi is available and the hotel also has a couple of computers for guests to use. Bathroom was good with soap, toothbrushes etc provided for and a nice hot shower.

The staff in the hotel was very friendly (though like any other staff in Vietnamese hotels, they try to sell you their tours or try to find out where you are heading next so they can offer you to buy your train tickets, but not in an aggressive way). The drivers of the shuttle bus were also very friendly and also punctual, and sometimes they would even drive us outside the official driving times. The shuttle runs twice an hour into town and back and is a short ride. It drops you off at the hotel's sister company (tailor, we haven't tried them ourselves) which is a short walk away from Hoi An's old center. The last shuttle back to the hotel leaves a little before 10PM, but that is not really a problem because Hoi An shuts down by that time any way. You can also arrange to take the shuttle to the beach but it will cost 50,000 dong/pax one way. We cycled instead which was a short and nice ride. The hotel also has motor and bicycle hire.

The pool was lovely and beautiful, and the breakfast (included) was a good buffet with quite a lot of choice in fresh breads and pastries, fruit, juices, coffee/tea, rice, vegetables, and they make fresh omelets and banana pancakes on the spot. The hotel also serves lunch and dinner but we didn't try.

We booked a half day trip to My Son through the hotel which was good.

We would definitely recommend this hotel. Even though it is a little out side of Hoi An old town, it is only a short ride away and very quiet, friendly, and great value for money.

There are many plus points about this hotel, so i shall start with those first. the rooms are really big and the bed is pretty comfortable. The shower is powerful and the bathroom clean. The hotel's pool was a major plus point - a lovely setting and the perfect temperature. I could have spent ages in there. The buffet breakfast was also very pleasant with a good choice.
The negative - one major thing really - the service of the staff. On arrival the safe in our room wouldn't open so my husband went to reception and asked for someone to come and look at it - we had a lot of valaubles on us and didn't want to leave them in the room unlocked. The receptionist said that someone would be down in 5 minutes. We waited for 2 hours (i fell asleep) and no one arrived. We then went back to reception to ask again for some help and we were told that the person who could fix the safe had now gone home and would not be back until the morning. The next morning we went down to ask for help again and one of the receptionists came back to the room with us and sorted out the problem - there was no special person who could fix the safe - anyone could have done it but the staff there just couldn't be bothered.
Also, on our last night we asked for a wake up call - it never came. Fortunately we woke up anyone, lucky considering we had a flight to catch that day.
Final point -the shuttle bus does not run to time and can be a pain to wait for
