“Book the cooking class!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

The Southern Hotel is a nice hotel with a swimming pool, a decent breakfast and clean rooms. Compared to European standards it is a good average. But,but,but...the staff was very helpful and attentive to our needs and questions. But,but,but,... there are a lot of cooking classes in Hoi An (Morning Glorious, Green Bamboo,...). These commercial places organize visits to the local markets with groups of ten to twenty persons. In the Southern Hotel, we and our friends (2 couples) were the only participants. The visit to the market and the preparation of the food was done by Huong Le. This lady is so funny, attentive and discrete at the same time - you can't imagine. We laughed, cooked and finally ate at the border of the pool. It was a really one of the most beautiful days of our jouney in Vietnam. So enjoy your stay in this hotel, but above all, don't forget to ask for Miss Huong to organize a superb cooking class.

We stayed at this hotel for eight nights and wished we'd upgraded to the nicer rooms as they appeared to be bigger and more light and airy. There is a shuttle bus into town which runs regularly but it's only a 20 minute walk so location for us was not a problem. Breakfast was "ok" but could be improved. There are three restaurants/cafés in the area - come out of he reception area - turn left and then left again and you will be able to get coffee and decent food. The nicest restaurant was the first one called 'I think you like" and we wished we'd discovered it sooner. You can get a very decent breakfast here if you want to give the hotel a miss. I think the hotel could advise guests that these restaurants do exist and are close by as we would have been grateful for that information at the start of our holiday.

Pluses:
1) Price - nice and cheap - book with an internet co and should be $25 or less for a twin.
2) Room a nice size and clean
3) We found the staff to be lovely and helpful - take a little time to talk to them and you will be rewarded for it! They helped us.
4) We did the My Son tour through the hotel - $6 each and it was very good and our guide was excellent.
5) No too far from the beach.

Minuses:
1) A bit of a trek from town ( not walking distance) - there is a free bus ( SUV) provided at set times - but be aware it drops you outside a tailors shop so you have to be prepared to say no... ( every day!!). Taxis back to the hotel are about 40,000 Dong ($2). There are bikes/motorbikes for hire.
2) The TV did not work on the first day - they fixed it the second day - still poor reception on a number of channels. Whilst fixing the TV they inadvertently loosen the fridge plug = warm drinks. The Wi-fi did not work one day.
3) The bathroom design is poor - when you shower you get the toilet wet so move the toilet paper first!! A bit tired too.
4) There is no safe in the room.
5) The breakfast is the worst we have had so far in 8 weeks of traveling - the fruit juice is like syrup, there is no cereal, the fruit looks tired, the Asian section is small, no bacon or sausages, the bread was nice baguettes - but not much to put on it - the cheese is all in packets and not much is put out - we had to ask for more...
6) We could not find any restaurants around the hotel for lunch.
7) There is no bed head and the holding bracket for the A/c is on the wall above the bed - so watch out!

Stayed here for three nights.

All in all pretty good the only things were the tv had awful reception, the breakfast could have been better and it was a bit of a hike from town.

Very comfortable bed and room and the pool area was lovely, although it lost he sun very early in the afternoon.

Here are the positives:
+ Beautiful property set just outside of the hustle and bustle of the main town.
+ Free shuttle (SUV) into town (granted, it is only at certain times of the day and he doesn't wait around so be there early/on time).
+ Bikes are available to rent (although not provided free of charge like some other places far from town).
+ Gorgeous and wonderful swimming pool! I decided to stay my extra night despite all the pains just to enjoy this one more day.
+ Comfortable rooms with adjustable A/C, cable and private bathroom.
+ Decent breakfast buffet included.
+ An AMAZING new restaurant is located just around the corner called: I Think You Like.
+ We found the price to be cheapest to book online with either on Agoda or Hostel Bookers ($18-20 for a twin private room w/bath).

Drawbacks:
- Overall we were quite disappointed with the reception staff (especially because we just came from a wonderful hotel in Hanoi that was super friendly and helpful, this was a major let down). Not very helpful or friendly. On the contrary, didn't seem like they really had our best interest at heart. We were loaded down with luggage and they didn't think to help us up/down the three flights of stairs until they saw us struggling.
- The WiFi was VERY spotty...usually didn't get reception in our room and only was reliable in one area of the lobby. I had a work call one night over Skype and since it didn't work in my room, I had to go to the lobby. The connection only worked next to the reception desk, but the staff member wanted to go to sleep behind the desk and asked me to move, turned off the lights and told me to be quiet. A little inappropriate/unprofessional in my opinion, especially since they claimed to have this amenity and actually didn't.
- They tried to overcharge us when converting from USD to Dong for a tour. (By the way, the day tour to the Cham Islands was TERRIBLE. Hot, crowded and incredibly disorganized. We regretted our decision to go, especially since it was our last full day in Vietnam.)
- Their motorbikes for rent are $10/day, the most I've seen in 5 months of travel in Asia!!! They claim it's this price everywhere in town. FALSE. At the motorbike rental outside of the hotel by the shuttle drop-off in town, motorbikes are only $4/day!!!!
- Ants were all over our room and in the breakfast buffet. There was also moldy bread several days, not sure how often they really change out or check the bread.

Nice friendly hotel, not in the centre of Hoi An, but not to far away either.
We booked a superior but when we arrived we had been upgraded to a villa, and very nice it was too. Large comfortable bed, small balcony and an excellent bathroom with a great shower. Powerful and reliable air con which was very welcome in the heat of Hoi An.
Breakfast was ok, but be warned you have to get up early as it tends to go quickly.
The hotel staff where very friendly and helpful.
Overall it was quite a pleasant stay.

Booked and paid for a double but were given twin and told we would have to pay extra for a double room so off to a bad start. The tv volume didn't work but they did replace that once we mentioned it. Towels and sheets look old and the room is very dusty under the beds. Bathroom is nice and the pool is very good, but the location is quite bad, not a nice area. About 15 minute walk into town or the shuttle is good if you time your day right. Taxi from town approx 2US$. Quite noisy next to the stairs and construction next door. Wifi is very unreliable also. Did not eat the breakfast. Overall it is ok, pretty decent for 22$US per night for the standard room but you could do better in hoi an in a nicer area and closer to the action
