Owner description: Located on the banks of the poetic Thu Bon River, in central Quang Nam province, 30 kilometers south of Da Nang, Hoi An ancient town is an Eastern oriental classic captivation. With the strategic location on the banks of the great river, with one seaside border (East), it used to be one of the major trading centers in Southeast Asia during the 16th century due to the early western trader occupying period.

A great French colonial ambience...I found the French bread better in Saigon though but the wet market really buzzes here

“Great place to lose yourself on foot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

Ancient town was our escape from the noisier, traffic filled Laos of Central Market and the newer part of town. You didn't tend to get hassled as much by shop merchants etc in Ancient Town. There are great temples, museums, historic buildings and the Japanese Covered Bridge to explore. Many great restaurants, stalls, and shopping. We enjoyedAncient Town immensely, especially down by the river at night. Well worthy exploring.

“The Old Vintage Chinese Style Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

My impression about Hoi An is that it is very much alike with those cities you have seen in old chinese movies, e.g.: Once Upon in China. The shape of the houses are pretty much like old chinese houses during the glorious kung-fu era. Only, those houses you can see in Hoi An have been transformed to cafe, restaurant, shops, etc. You can go around the town by walking or by bike.

You can go to local tailors and order some shirt or suit or pants. Yes, people do this in Hoi An. It is good and it is cheap.

The town icon would be the Japanese Bridge that you can actually walk through. Some original houses are turned into museum. Some said these houses have been constructed using 3 architectures - Chinese, Japanese, and French. Visitors are allowed to go in.

On the night, the riverside is a good place to eat. Some illumination is often set up on the river surface. There is also a wood carving village located about 20-30 minutes away from the river by the boat. Visit it on daytime.

The other attraction is May Son Temple located about 1 hour away from the town. It is a ruined temple, not so good though. In my opinion it is nothing compared to Angkor Wat or Borobudur.

Overall, I recommend Hoi An as a good place to visit. If you like a vintage city that still maintain its originalities, Hoi An is one of them. So, give it a try. It is one of UNESCO world heritage site afterall.

“Beware”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

The Ancient Town is fantastic, make sure to go down to the river at night as the lanterns and light are loverly. The markets are good but very same, same. You are encouraged to barter so have fun with it adn dont worry if you miss out as you go to the next trader and try again. BEWARE of traders trying to help you with the DONG (money) they get into you purse and unfortunately we experianced money being taken and it took alot of effort getting it back. BEWARE - Dont let them help you with your money. Also be careful with the amount of zero's on the notes as very very easy to misread zeros and give to much money. We also found it helpful to have a wee note with the exchange values on so you know exactly how much you are spending. They accept DONG and US currency.
