We spent a morning at the Hoi An Silk Village having made the booking from our reception desk that same day. We
were picked up in a private car and driven to the Village where we were met by the manager and our tour guide Van. Van was a fantastic guide and we had her all to ourselves. She spoke excellent English and was really knowledgable about the entire silk production process. On arrival we were given some lovely cold mulberry juice drinks to sample and they were delicious. Van then proceeded to take us on a tour through various 'houses' where different aspects of the process were demonstrated to us. We saw the different mulberry trees and the silk cocoons. We then saw how the tiny grubs are fed fresh leaves and how quickly they grew into full sized caterpillars before making their cocoons. Van then shows us how the ladies would boil the cocoons and start to unravel the fine threads of silk and combine them to make the strands that we know. From there we saw the looms in action both very traditional and slightly more modern ones. Finally we were taken to their retail room where we were able to browse their products at our leisure without any hint of sales pressure from the very helpful staff. Van then took us to one of their restaurants for a sumptuous meal that be could hardly finish. All this for just $19 a head, what a great experience. If you go and are lucky enough to have Van as your guide you won't be disappointed.
