Overlooking the bustling street of Vietnam was the Ancient Faifo restaurant. It was quite large yet somehow homely; we were led up a flight of stairs to several cleanly laid out tables where we studied the menu of authentic dishes, made unique. Ordering four starters and four main courses to share between six people, it was in contentment and marvel that we ate in the quiet, tranquil ambience of the room, fans blowing from all around. Neither were we disappointed nor hungry by the end of our meal. The starters that met us were stunning in appearance, exceptional in taste; the Ancient pancake was delightfully crisp, topped with a sauce of meat and vegetables; the fried calamari in a hollow of white lettuce was delicious, the pomelo salad juicy and fresh; the mushroom dumpling in a soup of pumpkin puree was wonderful; we really appreciated the delicate, quaint lightness of the appetisers, meticulously made so that even the raw vegetables were impressive. These were followed by the duo of pork with noodles, which was good; the well-presented Ancient noodles; the scrumptious crab meat rice and the memorable prawn in tamarind sauce (we have been searching Vietnam for a replica of this ever since); and the lovely trio of chicken and chicken rice, the best dish that I have eaten in Vietnam. Ancient Faifo was different, was thoughtful, and it was beautiful that way.
