Perhaps the most pleasant stay I've ever had - anywhere - thanks to the sumptuous surroundings and employee attitudes. The staff of Little Hoi An Boutique are remarkably professional and kindly attend to guest needs as would a five star enterprise. The first encounter with this hotel was on an evening bike ride, The design struck me as traditional and in-keeping with the architectural integrity of this UNESCO World Heritage city. I was cycling whilst seeking a new place to stay after a very inhospitable experience at an inn across the Thu Bon river.
Staff member Victor welcomed me inside the lobby and, upon hearing my reasons for wishing to change hotels, assured me that the poor customer-service encountered prior is not at all indicative of Hoi An hospitality. In fact, he said he was "shocked" at the poor service and took pride that at the newly opened Hoi An Little Boutique Hotel (December 2012), customer service comes first. He then showed me a room which was beyond my budget - well, all rooms were beyond my budget; he offered to explain the circumstances to the manager the next day, who he thought might offer a discount.
Moving hotels was the best decision I made while in Hoi An, experiencing the heritage, hospitality and unique culture of this ancient port city. The hotel sits on the river, just across from historic old town and the famous Japanese covered bridge. The decor throughout the hotel is understated yet stunning; traditional Hoi An style wooden rafters and silken lanterns adorn the common areas and guest rooms. Water color paintings of local street and architectural scenes hang on the walls of the guest rooms. History hangs next to flatscreen TVs, with major international news and entertainment stations. Spacious bathrooms have old-style sliding wooden doors and new-style amenities like low-flow shower heads and hair dryers.
A lovely atrium garden area is where you may sit for breakfast amidst tangerine trees from Tet celebrations, wishing all prosperity and luck for the Vietnamese new year. Street-side dining afore the river has tables filled with customers delighting in traditional Hoi An dishes like Cao Lau (succulent slices of marinated pork atop thick rice noodles and herbs) and White Roses (dumplings similar to Shumai).
The breakfast layout is hearty, with a plethora of Vietnamese and European options to choose from. Home made egg noodles are tossed with dumplings and fresh chives in bowls awaiting broth; alongside the noodles is the made-to-order omelet station. Bounties of bread baskets offer options behind a table boasting a host of rice, noodle and dumpling plates. Fresh fruits and juices are housed next to the cereal bar. Staff are on standby to help refill your glasses of juice, water or mugs of tea or coffee.
Energy and water conservation measures are in place, with dangling notices in rooms and common areas citing conservation methods. As a new hotel, their KWh and gallons of water saved are not yet available. The infinity pool is small, ensconced in a a cozy lounge area, a few pool chairs are assembled beneath a small overhanging roof. One of the highlights of my stay was meeting some wonderful guests from Oregon poolside; they were food blogging their way through Vietnam, and swapping details on fabulous Hoi An street food and cooking tours.
A one night stay ended up with a grand surprise - someone kindly treated me as a guest at the hotel. And the staff gave a parting gift of a pair of traditional Hoi An bamboo-lined slippers. Unexpected and absolutely generous of all involved. I can only hope to pay it forward someday. The font of generosity continued to flow, with the thoughtful manager helping to secure reservations in Ho Chi Min City at Little Saigon Boutique Hotel, with a half-price discount.
The stay at this fine boutique hotel solidified an intense love of travel, experiencing the traditions of other cultures and a desire to engage more fully in the realm of hospitality. Thank you for the inspiration, Little Hoi An Boutique Hotel!
