We stayed at the Ocean Breeze room for 4 nights, and were treated like royalty. Even though the trip was meant to be to Hoi An, we barely wanted to leave An Bang. Lying around in the shade with an ocean breeze, 45 steps to an empty beach vs the stifling still heat of Hoi An in June, what would you choose?
An Bang Beach proper was a 5 min walk away, with plenty of restaurants and bars. At night, it is filled with families having BBQs on the beach (complete with BYO grills and car battery powered lights). The locals wisely choose to avoid sunburn during the heat of the day, but flock to the water 5-8am and after 5:30pm. This explains the deserted beach photos I couldn't believe before I arrived.
Everyone was warm and friendly, I had a great time sitting on the lawn outside our room chatting - Chau our gracious receptionist, Tan (and David), Vy and her parents (thanks to her dad for the offer to take us on a fishing trip), bumping into another staff at his brother's An Bang Beach restaurant (that was my deciding factor to eat there, and had delicious grilled clams). And even the staff without a great command of English - especially the elderly lady and two boys - always had a smile and bent over backwards to help us. One night we were heading out and Vy's dad leaped up and grabbed one of the other guys to ask in English if we were going out to eat, and tell us that Soul Kitchen had live music tonight. It's these little things that they don't have to do that make this place special.
On the drive from Da Nang airport, we passed miles of seaside resorts. Why pay hundreds of dollars for impersonal monolithic luxury when you could stay here?
