“Great Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This resort was a great place to stay.
All four of us arrived unannounced and nothing was to much trouble, they found all of us rooms in front of the pool which was awesome. We were there in June and there was no shortage of rooms availiable. The rooms were clean and tidy and the service was very good.
The resort is well situated across the bridge from the main town (a two minute walk) with no shortage of places to eat across the river.
We plan to go again next year and we would definatley stay here again. Reasonably priced.

Room Tip: A room by the pool is a must with a view of the river

We arrived here via Ho Chi Min City, and at Da Nang airport we were met with a very friendly driver from the riverside whom we had pre-booked earlier, and just to see his cheery smile holding up my name put us both at ease right away his name was Nguyen. On the way this guy chatted non stop about his country and the places we passed which summed him up and was a credit to his company along with his other fellow drivers. !
From the very friendly speedy, girls on reception to the guys taking care of our luggage, it couldn't have been easier i even got a polite wag of the finger for attempting to pick up a suitcase, as you don't see your luggage until you arrive in your room now that's what i call service. I had asked for a room over looking the river and what i got didn't disappoint, a lovely clean spacious room with all the basic mod cons including a large bowl of fruit, and a well stocked mini bar to match which went down a treat. There is also a very large bathroom and a shower which is a honeymooners dream as there is ample room for two..????
The view also from my balcony on the second floor was awesome as you could sit with a cold drink whilst watching fishermen casting their nets in the river below, and behind them the local people toiling in the paddy fields complete with water buffaloes. And to really set the scene one could watch the sun setting right over the river, for a view like this comes only once in a while and it really is relaxing to say the least..!
As for the rest of the resort which is set in it's own tropical gardens with little ponds it came across as very clean with everyone smiling and saying hello, the swimming pool was also clean with plenty of sun loungers etc, and if you wanted something to drink/eat no problem just ask the friendly waiters. Breakfast was really good too with plenty of variety in fact everything from a three course meal to omelette's and much fresh fruits and so on, and all this consumed whilst sitting with a brilliant view over the river watching the army of ducks waddling along the river bank quacking loudly, in fact this was a regular sight both at morning & at sunset which really set the rural feeling here, a truly peaceful setting. The evening meals were also pretty good here too if a little more expensive than down at Hoi An it's self, but in all honesty it wasn't that expensive by Western standards, we ate several times here and were not disappointed by the menu I even tried their fish in banana leaf which was very tasty indeed. There are also many restaurants outside the main gates either left or right and it's you're choice and by all accounts are quite cheap and within walking distance.!
I have also read that some reviewers were not happy here regarding insects, smells etc, what i don't understand is how some people expect to come to a tropical setting like this and not expect to see insects or even experiance some bad smells, we had a lizard in our room to which i didn't mind as it was eating the bad bugs and never bothered us, we had also ants outside which by using some common sense and by putting some sugar down in a far corner of the balcony meant the said ants spent all their time there, problem solved trust me.! As for smells try camping in a Masai Mari village for a few days as we have in the past, remember you ARE in a HOT tropical climate here folks. As we were spending 9 nights here we got to know the routine pretty well regarding the shuttle buses and they run about three times a day down to Hoi An and to the beach the last bus leaving the town about 21.30 which is when everything is shutting down anyway, or you can always get a taxi from reception and costs around 50,000 dong or £1.80 or $2 which is nothing, Going on to the Internet which i tried and gave up due to Hotmail not being really accepted here for some reason, to be honest i wasn't really that bothered as it was so slow anyway. As for laundry there is a little laundrette called " Mrs Ha" just outside the gates turn left and about 100 yards there she is, and she takes about two dollars a kilo which is quite good.
Going back to the friendly staff here and one example was when i bought some fragile bamboo model sampan boats and as i had no box, i asked one of the maintenance guys if he could help me out, he returned some time later with them practically gift wrapped in a sturdy box for me, now thats what i call service and he was a credit to this resort.! If I'm being honest i can truthfully say we enjoyed our stay here immensely and would i stay here again absolutely yes as we had no problems at all. A special mention must also go to the friendly girls on reception whose names are NA & TH'AO and the other girl who took our picture her name escapes me, but they were so friendly & professional and a credit to the resort and made our stay so enjoyable like everyone else did. So give this resort a chance if you want a slice of the real Vietnam you won't regret it..!

Room Tip: Always ask for a riverside view on a top floor if possible, and also bring a torch with you as the p...

This was booked through our tour company as part of our comprehensive private tour of Vietnam. We spent three nights here and didn't have any of the problems already mentioned. Comfortable, good pool and eating breakfast by the river was cool and relaxing. However, if I went back I would book a hotel in the town of Hoi An, even though we had access to a regular shuttle into town. It would just be more convenient to walk into town whenever you wanted rather than wait for a shuttle. Didn't have any problems with accessing the internet in the hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful but their rate of exchange for changing money was poor compared to the town.

we found the grounds and room quite lovely, and was nice and quiet by the riverside and a bit out of town.
The first room we were given had a very strong smell of drain/plumbing. I complained and we got moved immediately to another room with no problems.
The staff were very helpful and lovely and recommended some good tailors.
The pool was crystal clear and great for lounging around as it gets so hot in Hoi An during the day.
Breakfast was good, though the food and drinks menu was average and expensive.
We enjoyed, and we'd go back.

Kim

Room Tip: The river view is lovely. In down season, they upgraded us for free.

We stayed for a week at The Riverside, and enjoyed its peaceful setting and large room overlooking the river, with its colonial styling. However, some irritations built during the week-namely the utterly useless Wi Fi capability -OK if you were the only user in the hotel at 3am! No chance of Skype. The pool became useless half way through the week, turning cloudy, then luminous green -again, despite assurances it was being sorted out "today" -as most problems were-it wasn't. Saying that-location very good-you can look over the paddy fields at the water buffalo on the far bank and watch the fish jump in the river. The beach is walkable and the Hotel also runs an infrequent shuttle to beach and town which is free. Last bus back 21.30 -but the town largely shuts down then. The beach has some of the most persistent-albeit lovely-beach sellers you will encounter!
In Hoi-An itself -which is great -try what we called 'The Shed" -a collection of local street food vendors, off street, collected in a long bamboo shack on the far side of the river -over the bridge to the night market -turn left and continue to the bend in the street-fanatastic food and no tummy trouble! And if you want any laundry doing -see the lady over the road who does it by weight -not item price.

Room Tip: First block by the pool had the best internet connection, sporadically!

Given what happened to us I could be justified in giving a very poor review but that would be unfair. We arrived after a hot day on motorbikes from Hue. My wife found lots of black things on the bed that she thought were some kind of oriental welcome that they are so fond of here. The romantic flower petals and so on. So she wiped them off the bed and forgot about them. When we went to bed there were more of them and we eventually worked out they were fried ants that had been burnt in the light fitting above the bed and floated down onto the bed. It was now late, we were tired so I taped the menu to the light fitting to stop them falling down onto us and went to sleep. We woke to find hundreds of dead ants on the bed covers. Nice. I also had to do battle with a gigantic flying cockroach in the middle of the night. I trapped the beast alive under a glass and went back to sleep.

The next morning the manager came to look at the room and apologised about the ants. I showed him the beast in the glass as well but he did not offer to get rid of it. I guess that is my problem. I caught him, he is therefor mine now. They gave us a new room which was fine and we left it at that. In case you are wondering I let the cockroach go out the window and it flew over the river somewhere.

We stayed another 3 days and I thought about how to review this hotel. I run my own business. When something goes badly wrong my immediate thought is to make some gesture to the client as a show of compensation. The Riverside could have done this for us. A free dinner in their restaurant, a beer, a free laundry, anything. But nothing was offered. And I would say that is about right for the Riverside. The rooms are pretty good and the location between the town and the beach suited us just fine. Its just that the details are not there with the Riverside. They are only interested in fleecing the tourists for whatever they can get away with. The breakfast is poor, the restaurant charges double to anything in town, laundry is expensive and so on. Want to hire a motorbike for a day? $15. Go across the road and Mrs Ma's tourist hut will rent you one for $5. Go across the road and they will do your laundry for $1 per kilo. Et cetera.

Is the Riverside a bad hotel? No, in many ways it could be a great hotel.

Would I stay here again? Probably not...

Room Tip: Get one overlooking the river

We stayed here for two nights. It is a well located hotel on the banks of the River, half way between the town and beach, which are a short taxi ride away. It's clean, the rooms are adequate, but not five star. The rooms are scattered in blocks around the property in two story units. We had a ground floor room with river views - which I would recommend. The restaurant has a nice open air setting overlooking the river - the food is OK, but not brilliant, there are some good places nearby and in town that are worth trying. The old part of Hoi An is a lovely to explore - it's pedestrian only. We would not say don't stay here , but we would look around to see if there is anywhere else with better value for money.

My wife had injured her ankle, so was not very mobile, and we had some monsoon rain one night and day - which restricted our movement , and perhaps the staff could have been more supportive.

Room Tip: I would recommend getting a room with a river view , and for me at ground level - there is open farm...
