Hoi An is a tourist and money trap, make no mistake. I love it though. It is one of my favourite places in earth. This wonderful shop is expensive yet excellent value for money. Here's why. In Hoi An, everything is supposedly made by someone the shop keeper knows. Paintings done by "local artist my friend" or photos taken by "my sister" or clothes made by "my family". In reality most of it is mass produced in a factory. Not so here at Reaching Out. I watched a talented but disadvantaged young man hammer out my new brass coffee drip filter, we saw the young lady put the finishing touches on a duvet cover for our bed and saw another talented, hearing impaired boy cut out my wife's necklace and use a special tool to link tiny pieces of silver into a chain. It is expensive, but only by Vietnamese standards and worth it to see these lovely people getting money (small amount though it may be). I am happy that this place does not exploit the disadvantaged but allows them jobs and training.
