“One of two best things in Hoi An”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2015 NEW

We were lucky to be in Hoi An last Thursday (tours do not run every day) and joined a group led by the lovely Li, a student who is practicing her already very good English. The agency rented bikes for my husband and me ($1.50/day!), and we loaded the bikes onto a ferry for a brief ride to a rural island. We biked to a shipbuilding yard, a home "factory" where they make rice paper, another where sleeping mats are made, and a local temple. Li was happy to explain rural life, and we were given the chance to make the rice paper and weave the mats. The little money collected goes to pay for the ferry, and give to the local community. Other than that the tour is free! We were a small group of young folks from the UK and Germany; my husband and I were the oldest by about 40 years. But the biking is easy, the company was great, Li was a delightful guide, and the tour overall is terrific. The other best thing in Hoi An is the Hoi An Food Tour, run by a sister organization.

“Brilliant tour with charming guide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2015 NEW via mobile

One of the best things we did in Vietnam - really loved it!

You start off at the office where you're assigned a tour guide and a group. We were with a Swiss couple who were great, with Giang who was to be our charming tour guide!

We handed over our ferry money and a contribution to the community (more on that later) - whilst the tour is free, you pay for your own transport and make a small contribution to community projects - total 50k so not a large sum.

You start with a short ride through Hoi An to the ferry to get across to Kim Bong island. Followed by a short ride to get to the carpentry village.

Giang then took us into what was essentially a shipyard - and talked us through the process including lots of info on how it works and how long things took. We did ask something she didn't know but she found out from one of the carpenters - so curiosity welcomed!

Next a ride to a family temple, where we found out lots about how ancestors are worshipped as well as the difference between these and pagodas. Some of the money you give at the beginning is then left as a donation.

Next on to rice paper making and sleeping mat making - interwoven with lots more information about the cuisine, how people live and make a living on the island and the opportunity to talk to your guide.

This was one of the things we really enjoyed - our guide was lovely and gave us a different perspective on he country to people we've spoken to before.

The remaining money was given as a contribution to those demonstrating their skills to us. There's the chance to make your own rice paper too, which you can then sample!

Final pitstop was a carpentry shop, and some information on the master carvers of the island.

All fascinating, and a lovely, relatively short bike ride around the island too.

A must do in Hoi an!

“A different tour... perfect experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2015 NEW

It was a pleasure to take part in the Hoi An Free Tour! Our guides were Trung and Tuan and it was more than just getting to know the area by bycicle... we had a very good cultural exchange and a fun time together. They really wanted to show us their city and we were very happy we did this wonderful tour. We defenitly can recommend it to everyone travelling to Hoi An and want to have a look beyond the normal touristic tours.

“Absolutely have to join!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2015 NEW

Me and a couple of friends joined the tour in Hoi An with some bikes to a very rural island, all of us enjoyed it a lot since we got insights to interesting locations and people. The students, that gave us company were really good at conversing in English and we honestly had a great time. It's definitely worth going with them for a day, helping them improve their English, discover the local areas and even pick up a few words in Vietnamese.

“Biking and singing with the locals in the Hoi An countryside.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2015 NEW

We had the best day riding through the countryside with Hai. He was charming, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in getting to know our group, and sharing the beauty of the area and its people. We learned about boat building, rode the local ferry, made rice paper, visited a family temple, a kindergarten class, and had a marvelous adventure! We stopped to see betel trees, and Hai sang a wonderful song for us - and he has a great voice. This was a day we all remember, a treasure of our time in Vietnam.
