I found the Ancient House River to be quite a mixed bag experience. The location of the hotel is out of town, but we liked the quiet, more rural location compared to the busyness of Hoi An centre. The shuttle bus runs every couple of hours into the town and to the beach and so as long as you plan your day around the bus times then this is a convenient way of getting to these places and the location of the hotel is not really an issue. The last shuttle comes back from the town at 9:30pm, but almost the whole of Hoi An is already closed and asleep by this time anyway so this was not an issue. Alternatively, there are free bicycles to use - around a 25 minute comfortable cycle to either the town or beach, the roads are not busy or dangerous to cycle on during the day and you get to enjoy the views of the farmers and farm animals.
The rooms are of a high standard. However, upon running a bath for 20 minutes on the first night, I realised the large bath had a leak (likely the plug) and not only would the bath not fill more than a third but also all of the hot water had been used up and I wasn't then even able to have a hot shower. A maintenance engineer was sent to the room but could do nothing. We were assigned a new room the following morning, something which could have been offered the night before. Also a word of warning - the open shower area is VERY slippery after use.
The staff were not on the same level as we had experienced in the rest of Vietnam and lacked the personal touch. At times they seemed friendly-ish, but at other times uninterested. With only 4 people occupying 3 tables at breakfast and a total of 5 members of restaurant staff working, they all seemed more interested in chatting to each other or doing their own things rather than serving their clients. The food at breakfast is average and the selection from the buffet is limited and not that of a 4 star hotel.
The pool area is comfortable and clean. The gardens, particularly around the pathways, were overgrowing - we didn't expect to have plants wrapping themselves around us in order to get to the room.
The cost of the spa facilities, tours and airport transfers from the hotel are just outrageous for Vietnam, compared to the cost of using other local operators - $25 for an airport transfer to Danang through the hotel compared to $8 or less with a local company.
Overall it was not an unpleasant experience by any means, but there are numerous things that could be improved and if done so this could be a special hotel rather than an average one.
