I could not be happier that we chose to do the Phat Tire Ventures biking trip to the My Son ruins. I wasn't sure I wanted to go to the ruins because they have been largely destroyed and it is a boring tour bus ride form Hoi An. However, the biking trip was the perfect way to enjoy the ruins. We were lucky and had not only Ting, our guide, but Tieu (sp?) as well who was a guide in Dalat but moved to Hoi An. Tieu needed to learn the route so he came along on our tour. This was great for us so we each had a guide to ride alongside and enjoy some conversation.
The bikes were really well maintained and helmets were required. The ride began with a short ferry ride and then continued with amazing views of the countryside. I loved riding through the rice paddies and small towns where children ran out to yell "hello" left and right. Once at the My Son ruins, we had lunch (no problem with the fact that I don't eat meat) and then went on a short tour of the ruins. The focus of the day was on the ride to My Son, not the actual ruins and it was the perfect amount of time at the ruins.
We loved our guides and felt that Phat Tire Ventures is a reliable company. One little complaint... the driver who took us back to Hoi An was really rushing us to leave when we wanted to buy some water and use the restroom before the drive back. Also, funny to require helmets for the bike ride but have no seatbelts and a driver with no regard for safety. We took buses in Vietnam, which was had been warned about, but I felt that the Phat Tires Ventures driver back from the ruins was by far the scariest driver.
Don't want anyone to be scared off by my last comment... We loved Phat Tire Ventures so much that we went on a tour with them in Dalat as well!
