We look for fabulous Indian restaurants in every city – many disappoint. However, Ganesh was definitely a winner! We never saw a “packed” restaurant on any street in Hoi An as it is low season. However, when the taxi pulled up to Ganesh and we saw the crowds, I worried that I should have made reservations. We got the last table available.
Food is prompt and efficient. You can tell that they have the system down pat and they want to get you your food as quickly as possible. I ordered Prawn Tikka Masala, my most favorite Indian dish. My husband had Tandoori chicken. We shared garlic naan bread, steamed rice and we started with vegetable pakoras.
The pakoras, although a bit different than what I am accustomed to, were very tasty. The mint and chili sauces served with them were both excellent. My prawn dish was very good. Nice consistency and flavor in the sauce. The prawns were just a bit overdone so were tougher than they should have been. My husband had quite the experience with his chicken. He always asks for “spicy” and most people, thinking that as a foreigner, he doesn’t really mean spicy, tone it down. However, Ganesh our waiter, had a mischievous look in his eye when he promised it would be spicy.
I have never seen my husband gasp like he did after the first bite. It was spicier than he ever imagined. So just know that if you order spicy, you very well may get what you ask for here – especially if you get Ganesh as your waiter. However, the chicken was beyond tender an d delicious. The naan bread was one of the best we have had anywhere. Soft, tender and perfectly shaped like a teardrop – a sign that it was properly cooked in a Tandoori oven.
This is a noisy restaurant – there is nothing quiet or romantic about it. Everybody is enjoying themselves, laughing and talking and the noise is not buffered in any way. It can be loud. We had a great dinner and when the bill arrived and with 3 beers, it was under $20 US, who can complain. We would have paid 4 times the price in the US.
We wish every town in S.E. Asia had a great Indian restaurant like Ganesh. If you have a yearning for great Indian food, then you have got to try Ganesh. If you’re visiting in high season, for sure I would recommend making reservations.
