“Cooking class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

My friends and I did a cooking class at Cafe 43 and it was amazing. When we got there they had already set everything up so we could start right away. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. We prepared six dishes ( because there were six of us) stuffed squid, chicken with lemongrass, papaya salad, hot beef pot, spring rolls and eggplant in tomato sauce. The girl who taught us spoke good english and was really patient. I'd go back anytime

“Friendly and well priced restaurant, but above all fantastic and delicious food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013 via mobile

Cafe 43 is located on the quieter, northern part of Tran Cao Van. We stayed in Hoi An for three nights and ended up eating dinner here three times. The restaurant is outdoors, but attached to a building and under a roof and with fans ,so it's not too stuffy in the heat of the late afternoon or evening. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, particularly the always smiling and jolly owner who makes time to speak with all his tables.

The food here was excellent, right up with some of the best food we've had in Vietnam (so far after three weeks), especially the main courses. If you only go once then make sure you have the fried stuffed squid (74k dong), which is phenomenal. A delicious whole squid stuffed with a mix of mince, carrots and spring onions and served with a delicious lemon and pepper dipping sauce. Yummy! Over the three nights we also had the chicken curry (43k dong), beef wrapped in banana leaf (49k dong), chicken in clay pot (wonderfully seasoned, 49k dong). I would recommend all these mains. We also had some meaty meat spring rolls, cau lao, white rose and a pumpkin soup, all of which were well cooked and tasty. Fresh draught beer is good and surely amongst the cheapest in Hoi An at 3k dong per glass. At the end of each meal we were served a complimentary cup of tasty local tea (green tea flavoured by lotus flower and herbs).

The above was our experience but if you're not sure about my views you can then read the accounts of previous customers, which are hand written notes inserted underneath a glass covering on each table, along with mugshot passport photos of previous patrons. The tables make for some entertaining viewing while you wait for your courses.

I've added a few photos of the place and food from our third night's dining.

“Best value! Excellent food and ice cold 3000 dong beer!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

We were lucky this place was across the street from our hotel along with several other great, cheap restaurants. The owners are super friendly and the food is top notch! We loved the stuffed squid (wish we took the cooking class to learn how to make it!), pho, white rose, beef noodles and ice cold beer! Cooking class seemed like a great value too!

Refreshing, ice cold beer for 3000 dong (.14 cent USD) and a huge bowl of Pho for 25000 dong (1.19 USD)! How can anyone pass that up! Off the beaten path down a quite street and worth it!

“Great place off the beaten path - you should try!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013 via mobile

We tried Cafe 43 on the recommendation of a local in Hoi An. It's a bit off the beaten path from the center of town, but totally worth the short walk. The food was great, and the atmosphere is so much fun, with fun pictures and testimonials of past visitors, and an outside patio area with plants and several pretty gold bird cages with sighing birds in them. The food was delicious, local, and great prices. So glad we visited and will probably go back!

Don't expect fancy- just local, great food and fun.
