“Excellent service, good location for restaurants, far from sights”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2011

We had wanted to stay at the Malika Prime, but it was full of tour groups (the whole of Uzbekistan was full of groups when we were there in September). Our travel agency booked us here instead. The staff are very helpful and attentive, and speak excellent English. Ask them for good exchange rates and they'll be able to help. Room was fine, very clean, with comfortable beds and a large bathroom. There was no problem with the hot water supply and no leaks in the bathroom. It was indeed nice to be able to sit in the courtyard area and have a coffee (or a cold drink from the next-door shop).

Breakfast was decent -- pancakes, bread, eggs, fruit etc. -- and plenty of it.

It was a longish walk to the Registan, but a taxi is inexpensive and seems to cost less if you let the staff order one by phone. There was no internet, or business centre as advertised on their website, but they would let you use the computer in reception if you needed to check e-mails. There are several internet places just around the corner which were cheap and had good connections.

Room Tip: The courtyard rooms are good, but in rooms 1 and 2 you can hear everything that is going on in the r...

The Sherdor is a pleasant though basic hotel. It is reasonably well located near the park in the Russian part of town. The main site the Registan is about 25 minutes walk away. The staff are very pleasant and helpful; one of the new members of staff was particularly keen and helpful as well as having good English. There is a pleasant courtyard in which to sit in. The room I had was fairly small; the bathroom was a good size however the shower leaked so that the bathroom floor was usually wet. The hotel would have benefited from the inclusion of Wi-Fi or internet connections. It would also have been beneficial to have had a fridge in the room. Breakfast was basic tea, bread and eggs.

Spent there 1 night because the hotel we wanted was full. It was quite a good substitute. Traditional style, friendly and professional staff, nice breakfast, clean and stylish rooms and convenient location.
It was a little bit cold in the room after sunset and then we had some problems with hot water. But hotel stuff quickly resolved this problem. Hotel also has a nice swimming pool, sauna, massage and SPA. But you'd better ask for it beforehand. I heard that hotel's restaurant is one of the best in Samarkand, but didn't check :)
We didn't fall in love with this hotel, but it doesn't cancel it's numerous merits.

Great location for Navoi park and city sights, plenty of places to eat nearby, in the russian part of town.

We were given Room 4, in the courtyard at the end. Next to the plant room. Pumps could be heard cycling on/off all night, and the maid is in the plant room bashind around at six every morning doing washing. The bathroom wall was heated to a sickly temperature and couldn't be switched off, I requested that the Hotel turn it off, nothing done there.
There was no hot water. i overheard other guests complianing of this too. It was tepid.
The shower was the most weakest of any place i've ever stayed in. i asked for the hot water to be fixed. Very polite, but no results.
The other rooms, all basic, looked better.
My advice, if theres somewhere you 'd really like to stay. Make reservations from home.
The Malika Prime hotel had the best spot in Samarkand.

Good things first: the service is simply excellent. They clean and care for you round the clock. The best thing was to sit in the inner courtyard leisurely eating a watermelon and drinking local favorite green tea. The stuff would be courteous and very helpful and never ask for a tip or even expect one. Several managers graduated from local colleges with degrees in foreign languages - nothing will be lost in translation. The hotel price was moderate ($45/day), perhaps above average by local standards, but way below what upscale hotels charge. The location is ok, only 15 min from Gur Amir, but good 25 min from Registan and much further from Shah-i-Zinda. On the other hand, for 1000-2000 soms ($1-2) you can hire a taxi and go just about anywhere in town. Also, the street is very quiet and relatively close to Timur street with lots of good local restaurants. Overall, the hotel is a good deal, probably as good as you can get in Samarkand unless you know somebody there...

Bad things: the amenities are not great. I was especially annoyed with the lack of hot water when needed. It would take 10-15 min of running before the water gets hot. Also, the gas pressure is low so it would take 15-20 min for them to boil a water for the tea. It's not the hotel's fault really, but perhaps the management can learn and finally buy basic electric teapots. Finally, their much advertised Guest House is a fraud. We spent over an hour in 110 degrees to get there and see nothing but a desert kishlak and a dirty manmade pond they call a "pool". They do not cook there but charge extra for everything. Essentially once you are there you feel like a "prisoner in the mountains". We paid our driver extra $20 to get us back to Samarkand immediately. We spoke to the owner (Arkady) who was indignant about the whole thing.

I stayed at the Sherdor for three nights in March 2007, and was very satisified with my choice.
The room was warm, clean and comfortable, the English speaking staff MOST helpful, breakfast more than i ever could (or should) eat. The bathroom literally sparkled.
I paid , for a single room with bath and breakfast US$35/night
The hotel staff can assist with planning your sightseeing and finding suitable transportation.
