“Good location, but felt impersonal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013 via mobile

We were in Uzbekistan on holiday with friends, and stayed here for three nights. The location is great, as you can easily walk to the main tourist attractions. The huge atrium gives an impression of space and glamour, but the rooms are just average hotel rooms that are a bit dated. Service was slow and not very friendly. The wifi in the lobby only worked intermittently, and was very slow.
Dinner is a buffet style. For western visitors it has a very poor selection as most of the dishes are salads, or have some uncooked fruit or vegetables, or herbs on them. Of course, westerners need to avoid uncooked foods to reduce the risk of getting gastro. We didn't have any salads, but still seven of the eight people in our group got sick whilst here. In one month of travelling in Asia this is the only place anyone was ill. I would suggest eating somewhere else.

The inside of this block is like a cruise boat with less grandeur though. Still, the architecture is designed to impress the incoming visitor. The room size was good, very good bed, check in and out super easy, good variety at BF but not amazing. As everywhere in Uzbekistan, the staff is very helpful and polite. The room had a wired 'wanna-be' western painting (like a Swiss village) on the wall which was totally odd. Elevator music is played throughout the hotel public facilities, including in the corridor in front of your room, so be ready not to sleep before 10:00 pm. The wifi connection was not working most of my 3-night stay.

Smart atrium style hotel, bit bland but reliable. Rooms fairly average 3 star, they all need a good overhaul and attention to detail. The staff all look tired and overworked and so are grumpy and churlish. The hotel needs some active management that checks all the rooms are working as they should.
Wifi a bit intermittent....
Good food, nice gift shop.
Great location near Timur's tomb and the Registan.
There are better hotels in Samarkand.

Room Tip: ask to see a few....

Quite a smart atrium style hotel but fairly charmless nevertheless, and the rooms weren't all that nice. Food OK. Best thing was the location with Timur's mausoleum anfd Registan Square within easy walking distance. 1 or 2 days max.

This hotel is known by two names -- Hotel President is the old name, but it is now being touted as "Registan Hotel". If you are unfortunate enough to get Room 502, expect a stained carpet, anemic a/c, a shower curtain that continually falls down and no waste basket in the room.

I didn’t find the reception staff very friendly or helpful. They have a complicated way of enabling wi-fi in your room (by kilobyte) and it just wasn’t worth the time nor effort for me. There is free wi-fi in the lobby and an internet cafe two blocks away (directions: go down the steps and immediately turn left until you get to the street, Make another left, walk for a block and cross the street. The internet cafe is about two doors from the corner on the same side of the street)

On a more positive note, their cable TV has CNN and BBC, hangers that can be removed from the closet and a comfortable bed. The buffet breakfast is excellent and the coffee is good.

The hotel claims to be 4-star, but in my estimation, the lobby might be 4-star, but the rooms are definitely 2-star.

Room Tip: Take a look at a few rooms before you accept one. People from the US never do this, but at this hot...

This hotel has recently been renamed the Registon Plaza hotel, but is still known locally at the President so that's the name you should give to taxi drivers.

The location is quite good, in the center of town on a broad, tree lined avenue, facing a park. The building itself is an awkward pastiche of styles and is entirely out of place in Samarkand -- with its green glass face it looks like something from Los Angeles circa 1970, although the staff assured me it had been built in 2013. The interior is a huge, echoing atrium, six stories high, with a stand-alone bar plonked right in front of the main entrance and the registration desk tucked away at the side, almost as an afterthought.

My room was small and seemed dated. The mattress was lumpy and had seen better days. The mini bar contained exactly two items, a bottle of fanta and a bottle of coke. The TV was of an older, pre-flat screen generation. There was no room safe. The bathroom was dated with the shower hung above an old fashioned tub. A wi-fi connection was available in the lobby only, for a fee, but with only three people using it the connection was so slow that it was not possible to open emails.

The air conditioning was not working in the entire hotel, despite this being a hot and stuffy day in May. The staff told me and several other arriving guests that the reason was that the air conditioning was not to be turned on until June. This turned out to be quite untrue -- it had been working recently but had broken down and they had no idea when it might be fixed. I might add that the reception staff had a grim and churlish manner.

There are better hotels in Samarkand.

A comfortable hotel as expected.

Rooms are okay and quite. Service was good. The food is average, don't expect something special. Drinks are way expensive like always in rated hotels. Bar closes early (11 pm).

The location is a bit outside the center, but okay. Registan place is about 20 minutes to walk, the mausoleum Gur Emir is reached in five minutes by foot.
