“Interesting museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2012

This is a small but interesting museum. Some life sized models were great to see, and the real relief that was found is quite stunning. Some of the pottery was a little plain and boring - I expected more artefacts from such a large archaeological site.

“Absolutely worth the visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2012

Nothing to see? Not for the uncaring tourist, but if you are really interested in history and like me, in Alexander the Great, it is a wonderful opportunity to taste an era that once was. It takes a lot of imagination, I agree, but it is an absolutely unique site. I hope one day more excavations will be carried out to reveal all the wealth that is still hidden deep under ground.
The museum is a true jewel in its own right, especially the room with the fresco from the 7th century, but also to get a comprehensive understanding of that city's rich history.

“The archaeological site is boring, however the museum is good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2011

A good museum, showing 2000 years of history. You can also visit the archaeological site, thou there is nothing to see.

“An unexpected wonder - definitely go and see the museum there”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2011

Afrasiab is one of the great evocative names of the silk route - and sure enough, the tell of the old city is one of the largest I have ever seen (and I am an ancient historian...). The real reason for visiting, though, should be the small museum there, which is full of interesting artefacts from the site's 3000+ year history. But the most amazing exhibit is a room full of wall paintings from the palace of a Sogdian ruler from c.600AD. I had no idea that Sogdian art even existed when I visited, and these vivid (if battered) paintings came as a complete, and joyous, revelation to me. It is in fact one of my most treasured memories from the whole of Uzbekistan.
