“Scratch away the veneer”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

This is a nice looking hotel with clean and attractive rooms. However, we experienced power failures, lack of water and noise from the wide and uncarpeted corridors. The location is poor with nothing easily walkable and no restaurant facilities in the evening. Breakfast was fine and the breakfast room very smart. We moved after one night of what was planned for a 3 night stay.

The building might be new and looks rather nice from the outside, wait until you stay in this hotel. Room is of generous size, high ceiling and spacious.

Mini bar is completely empty, they did not give us any bottled water at all, no tissue box in the bathroom, no waste paper bin in the room, and no kettle to make your own tea/coffee in the room. Wi fi is available although rather slow.

The room is clean though, and very quiet, so you are guaranteed to have a good night sleep if you can stand the surprisingly very hard mattress!

4 star hotel? Still a long way to go before they can claim to be 4 star.

As there are differents experiences with this hotel let see our experience.
Our room was the 202 and was very good, spacious, hall and a good bathroom. We had a satellite TV with the portuguese TV (!!??) and with lots of channels, as we found already in other places in Uzbekistan. In fact we had also a problem with the water and we had not hot water, but we said and in the second day the problem was solved and we got the impression that they knew already the problem. By the way the hot water is to the right side and not to the left as it use to be in our country. The internet Wifi is free and was working correctly in the room this means also slow as it use to be in Uzbekistan. The breakfast was very good and we noticed only that they had the TV very high and some customers asked to put lower or stop it but they put lower in Euronews.About swimming poool we didn't try and we didn't confirm if there are one or if it is a lake outside. In fact the phone number it is the same for sauna and pool. About location as we had a guide also no problem.

The hotel is not conveniently located for leisure, 25 minute walk at least to the historical center. The staff speaks poor or no English in general.

In our room, 210, there was only one international TV channel available (BBC World - all the others in Russian).

The hotel announces WiFi in each room, but at least in ours, there was no connection at all. I had to go down to the lobby to obtain a connection to the hotel wifi.

The hotel was almost empty, but they gave us a room which shower did not work properly, as the water was not evacuating properly. This was repaired on the second day but they already knew about this problem, and no cold water available (only hot). Moreover the shower had all these fancy water jets, but it was useless as the water pressure was very low.

Moreover, we were unable to use the pool the first day, the staff said it was busy, we could not get any more explanation.

I do not recommend this hotel.

Good breakfast though (this is the reason I give it one point).

The Samarkand Plaza hotel is a small hotel of 20 rooms or so. Recently built, it is a solid 4 star. It is made to look old so it has a lot of character. The location seemed a bit strange at first, but we soon realized because of the spread out nature of the city, there is no one perfect location. It is a bit pricey for Uzbekistan at $120 USD/night for a deluxe double but it is a very good value. The only downside is there is no real restaurant in or near the hotel, so one has to taxi to decent restaurants, but cabs are very inexpensive. The hotel staff is very helpful and gave us good recommendations on where to eat. We also decided to take the train from there to Tashkent, which turned out to be an interesting slice of local life. No chickens or anything like that, it is air-conditioned with quite comfortable seats and cost virtually nothing for a three and one/half hour trip in economy class (there are two higher classes, but they were full) and on-time. Also, the hotel staff graciously helped us find the proper carriage and seats and helped us schlep our bags on board.

As others say, this is an excellent base in Samarkand. High quality rooms and colonial style building. Only 16 rooms , so not plagued with groups. Amazingly there is an indoor pool!. Gardens are a really lovely for a cold beer. It is possible to walk to the Bazaar (15 mins) and from there to Reg Square, or just 5 mins in a taxi. Breakfast only, and eating is a bit of a problem : the only "recommended" restaurant was a hair raising 20 min taxi ride away (not much fun at night), and not really worth it when we got there.

The other reviewers are correct. This is a find in this part of the world. No meals except breakfast. Went to Astoria for dinner and found English menu. Hotel is well maintained with high ceilings and moldings, Lovely garden. Bathrooms have a bidet. Much better choice than any other hotel in Samarkand. .Laundry service reasonably priced compared to other hotel in the area,
