“Beautiful facilities but far from city center.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012

The facilities of the hotel are beautiful, you get a nice view of rio de plata and you have access to the spa and pool but the location of the hotel is about 6km from the city center. Near the hotel there is nothing to do so you either can rent a bike, take a taxi, take the bus or walk to get to the city center where you will find some nice restaurants, local stores, the river and get to see Uruguayans drink matte by the river. The service at the hotel is good.

I had a greta stay here and was impressed with the quality of the service especially for SPG members. The facilities are well-maintained and attractive with wonderful open views. I will definitely return to this hotel in the future.

Room Tip: They have an amazing PIZZA!

when paying usd 200+ for a room you expect a little more service, even in Uruguay. but at sheraton colonia they are too lazy to clean the room and when you ask them politely to clean a bit better (even when you have just checked in your room) they show up two hours later and still leave a dirty sock from another traveller under the bed and leave breadcrumbs on the floor. shame on you sheraton!!! 5 star?? no way. heed some serious refurbishment and NEW staff! maybe people from abroad who know how things work?

The hotel was absolutely fine and they set us up in a beautiful room. The food was so-so, but honestly it was better than most of the foot we had in town. If you want to go to Colonia for a night than this is the hotel to stay in, but honestly I would pass on Colonia for anything more than an afternoon...just not much there and it isn't worth a night away from Buenos Aires or Punte Del Este.

Was concerned about booking my stay here. Traveled with another couple and young teenager and while the hotel ticks a lot of boxes it also misses the mark in a number of areas, keeping it simple So what is bad? Service - staff are generally unwilling to help, let alone smile at you with the exception of the lovely young man looking after the kids club, client services phone operator and the room maids who made up our room. The checking was poor, room was not ready for 1.5hrs after the scheduled check in time - utterly unacceptable for a hotel of this standard. we we awoken by a staff member at 8.30am wanting to check the mini bar, the check-out took nearly 45 minutes, we had to line up behind every other person checking out on the day with only two ladies behind the desk. It was topped off by the fact they tried to charge us for things we hadn't even used, and breakfast's we didnt have and were also included as part of our rate. Dont even attempt to book over the phon, its too hard for them. Everything is charged extra, including the covered in-door pool shown as part of the resort, which is within the sheraton Spa and an additional US$15 to use for the day. Golf green fees are expensive, US$15 for 30balls on the driving range, and antoher $5 to hire a club, yes hire a 5-iron, or 1-wood.
What's good? Location if you have a car, it's really not too far out of town. It's modern, clean and has all modern facilities. Good restaurant, breakfast, outdoor pool area and spa. Great beds, in-room entertainment and strong water pressure shower. Lovely maintained grounds.
I do recommend this hotel because it is overall a nice place and cannot overlook that, and if you have kids and are lucky enough to have nice weather it can be enjoyed to its fullest. Also, Colonia is old and a lot of hotels are older. 1 night during our stay the entire city of colonia had a black-out following an electrical storm on returning to the sheraton, the hotel was the only building with power and electricty, this was greatly reassuring and worth paying to stay here.
Needs more customer friendly and focussed administration staff at front of house, improved check in and out and this place would get all the 5 stars it charges for!

Room Tip: Doesn't matter, hotel layout has views of creek or golf course, views of the creek aren't th...

I expected more from this Hotel. Overall, over-rated. The Devil is in the details and the details were absent here. Service was poor. Beware visitors, the Hotel is far away from the old city and there is no shuttle service (another big disappointment). Cherry on the cake, my gf's hair turned green after using the outdoor swimming pool because the Hotel did not use the right chemicals to combat some algae. Solution: a shampoo and a voucher for an extra night. Not nearly close to my expectations... I will not return, not even to redeem my voucher.

Overall the Sheraton Colonia has what it’s needed for a nice family getaway. But it does not live up to the expectations of a Sheraton resort that charges about $500 a room on high season. It is mostly a family place, great if you are with kids but maybe not for a quiet romantic weekend.

Location and grounds
The hotel is on the outskirts of Colonia. If you want to venture out to the city and enjoy its lovely colonial center and its restaurants at night you definitely need a car.
The hotel overlooks the Rio de la Plata and has access to a nice little beach. It has a golf course and well kept landscaping.

Rooms
The room was of standard size and the bedding confortable. 36 inch flat screen tv. But décor and furniture looked tired and cheap. No space for clothes. The bathroom was an unmitigated disaster. The toilet wasn’t flushing well and the tiny stall shower had mold and rust in the corners. A bathroom for a two star hotel at best.

Service and amenities
The service was uneven. Very good at the restaurant and bar, spa and children club but awful at the reception desk which displayed a combination of rudeness and incompetence.

Spa is very nice, clean and appealing. The fitness room has windows overlooking the park and new machines. The Spa pool is good but not large enough for lap swimming. It could have been a little warmer but I understand it was under repairs. My wife attended the yoga class and enjoyed it very much.

Outdoor pools and pool area is well kept and pleasing. Unfortunately the whirlpool wasn’t hot.
Children club is very nice and the staff enthusiastic and caring.

Internet by wifi connection for US$ 15 a day or half an hour free connection in computers in the lobby.

Food
The breakfast was very complete and of good quality. Served in dining room with views to the pool and golf course. Fruits, eggs made to order, pastries. Lunch was expensive (3 times the price of similar quality in town) but also good. Also good drinks at the outside bar.

Conclusion
If you want a resort experience in Colonia the Sheraton is probably the only good option, but do not expect a luxury room even though you are paying for one. Management should take greater care on properly training personnel at the reception desk. If the Sheraton Colonia wants to be consider a luxury property it needs improvement.
