“Charming!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

Perfect little place on the town square. Calm and quiet and a little magical once the day tourists leave and you're alone in the evening. Check out time is 11:00 a.m. but they know you're probably going to be taking a later bus or ferry out of town, so they allow you to leave your luggage in the lobby and provide bathrooms so you can come and go and be comfortable for the afternoon before you leave town. The restaurant right across the street on the corner of the plaza is good for a desert or drink, but the food is pretty miserable. Ask the nice people at the front desk for a recommendation--there has to be somewhere better in town. And do walk up to the main street and stroll some of the back city streets, not just the touristy "old town square" area--it gives you such a 1950s feel of a small city and is a nice break after the chaos of Buenos Aires or MonteVideo..

Great location but for 125 USD I expected a room bigger than one that leaves you with no room to open your case other than on the bed! Yes it's colonial so shouldnt expect the usual mod cons but if wifi in reception why not push out to rooms. Breakfast was average but you have everything on your doorstep in this lovely colonial town.

This hotel, which was selected for us by our tour operator, Imagine Latin America, is situated right in the heart of the old quarter of Colonia and so is a terrific base for exploration as well as for venturing out to restaurants at night. It’s a unique blend of an old Spanish home and an adjoining old Portuguese home. The rooms are of average quality and organized around a central courtyard containing trees, flowers and a fountain – a lovely tranquil setting in which to relax at the end of the day. There is also a separate enclosed outdoor area that gets the sun in the afternoon.

Colonia del Sacramento is an enchanting place and an oasis of serenity, especially when coming over from hectic Buenos Aires. Although small, it deserves more than the common day-trip rush, so staying a night is highly recommended. And if you do so, you would be silly to stay anywhere else than Posada Plaza Mayor! Right at the corner of Plaza Mayor this hotel is part of the scenery, actually a sight in itself, located in a historical building around an idyllic courtyard. Staff is friendly and helpful, rooms are basic (but clean and with comfortable beds) and there’s a decent breakfast, but what brings the 5 stars here is the wonderful setting, the charm, and the very relaxing atmosphere. Just spend some time in the courtyard, surrounded by trees and flowers and a beautiful fountain, go for a walk around the old town (it’s at your doorstep), and come back to relax a little more… Highly recommended!

This is a delightful old posada in the heart of beautiful old town. It was our last stop on a three-week trip through Chile, Argentina and Uruguay and we were getting a bit road weary as our taxi carried us through the cobblestone streets of the historic district and deposited us in front of the iron gates of the Hotel Plaza Mayor. However, the moment we stepped through the gates and saw the beautiful courtyard with the tiled fountain, lime and hibiscus trees and smelled the jasmine-infused air, we immediately perked up. Many of the rooms open up onto the courtyard, though to get to our room we went through the courtyard and upstairs. One of the guidebooks had warned that a couple of the rooms are extremely small. At the time we checked in, most of the upstairs rooms were apparently unoccupied and the large shuttered window in each room was open, so we were able to see in and it was true that the two rooms next to us were noticeably smaller. If you are looking for luxury, don't stay here. Even so, our room was lovely, though simply furnished. The walls were white, the room was bright, and the bed was comfortable and big. If television is important to you, you will be happy to hear they have Direct TV, although you cannot access the Internet from the rooms, only from the courtyard, reception area and a small television room. Unlike some of the reviewers who had new bathrooms, the one in our room was older but in good shape. The room seemed like the kind of place one might stay in in the Greek Islands. Breakfast was served in a lovely room overlooking the river. The food, however, was lackluster and, unfortunately, the coffee was the worst of any place we stayed in South America. That is a small matter, though, and it would not deter us from staying there again.

Room Tip: Away from the street

Excellent location in the old town. As can be seen from the other reviews this is a unique building in the old city, with a fountain in the courtyard and beautiful flowers.
We stayed in room 17, one of the rooms with the old Portuguese doors. Not great for accessibility, but a unique experience, and great on a vacation.

The room itself was spacious enough and beautiful inside. The bathroom, which was a good size, was new and sparkling clean.

As well as the central courtyard, room 17 overlooks another small private flower garden with grapes growing in one corner. We sat out here on the deck chairs at sunset and drank a bottle of wine, a perfect way to relax after walking about all day.

The breakfast was simple but adequate.

I had a lot of difficulty making the reservation from the USA. Not understanding Spanish did not help and so I finished up with multiple reservations. After getting the reservations sorted out and payment made PayPal withdrew the payment. The staff were very understanding and eventually all the reservation and payment issues were resolved.

The highest compliment you can pay a hotel is to recommend it to your friends and I certainly would recommend Plaza Mayor.

Room Tip: The price varies depending on the room, We liked 17 as the best room though others have recommended...

Just lovely with a beautiful courtyard . We had room off courtyard which was archetype of the 18th century building. Rooms 1 2 3and 4 probably the best with one in the garden?
Best if you avoid weekends as a lot of BA people come over .
