A lovely historic setting perfect for wandering. There are a number of small museums accessed though one ticket.

“Quietly beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014

Like many other travelers, we visited Colonia del Sacramento on a day trip from Buenos Aries. Strangely, although we visited many far more spectacular sites in South America, from Iguazu to Rio to Machu Picchu, Colonia has stayed fondly in our memories. Perhaps it was the contrast with Buenos Aries, perhaps it was the sense of colonial history, perhaps it was the relaxed quietness of the place. All I know is that I have an almost nostalgic yearning to return. Good heavens, if I spoke Spanish I could almost imagine living there.

Take the time to slowly walk around. Have lunch. Enjoy the old parked cars. It may not be spectacular, but it is a great escape from the bustle of the modern world. I could happily stay there for a couple of days if I ever return.

“Quaint...but that's about it!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014

I had heard a lot about Colonia and it sounded great. On arriving here though all I can say about it is that is quaint and quite charming.

It has old buildings by Latin America standards and they are rather nice but in my mind nothing stands out. The church was average, the old gate entrance was likewise.

Good things, nice cobbled streets, rustic buildings and tree lined avenues. For some reason too they like displaying old vintage motors in the street. I liked these but hardly what I expected in a UNESCO site.

All in all, quaint but only worth a few hours unless you want to chill out for a night!
