“Oasis culture”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

Al Ain Oasis, one of the five original oases that, combined with the two oases that are in Al Buraimi, over the border in Oman, made up the district known historically as 'Al Buraimi'.

The Al Ain Oasis is the largest of the oases and the first one that was developed for tourists. The oldest museum in the UAE is located near one of the several entrances to the Oasis; the museum is showing its age but is still worth a visit. Likewise, the Palace Museum, on the opposite side of the Oasis, is worth a visit.

Unfortunately there is no interpretive center to help visitors to appreciate the oasis culture though there is an excellent guide available online (search for Al Ain Oasis and you will see the guide by Phil Iddison listed).

The oasis culture dates back several thousand years. The best times to visit the oasis are in January and February when the date palms are in flower and in August and September when the dates are being harvested.

Be sure to visit the Souq al Manaq (the Fish Market) nearby.

“Date palms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

This is not what we typically think of an oasis - a water hole in the desert surrounded by palm trees - it is in fact a collection of cultivated plots owned by individual farmers. Still it makes a nice change to stroll thru the quiet bricked pathway listening to birds and trying to spot a fruit tree amongst the 147,000 date palms.
