“Great Hospitality......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

Stayed here for only one night in September before heading up to Bwindi to track the Gorillas and then The Boma on return for one night...Kiwi owner who has been in Uganda for several years and offers great knowledge of the the city and the country. Rooms were great and the service was excellent.

This is a small boutique B&B which gives that great atmosphere that you don't get at the larger ones like The Boma. The Boma is large with pool and all those things that I don't use when travelling but maybe useful to others. Wifi at both.

Either or are good to stay before heading off on your adventures.

We spent 4 nights at Karibu and highly recommend it as a great place to stay in Entebbe. It's clean, quiet, and conveniently located. The staff is very welcoming, friendly, helpful and competent. The food was truly outstanding. Lovely sitting areas. Friendly dogs. It was such a pleasure staying there! Leslie and Kevin, the owners, went out of their way to be sure that our stay was crafted to fit our specific needs. We highly recommend staying here.

I had a wonderful night at Karibu Guest House, it is in a quiet location, the management and staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful and the food was fantastic. A perfect spot to stay before or after a flight, they provided us with a packed breakfast before we headed out early in th mornng and the pancakes were amazing

Karibu means welcome in Kswahili as the two girls Sande and Jenny Told me. It is a very good and lovely place the staff were helpful and always with a smile to see you. The rooms are amazing. Stayed in Avocado with a beautiful lake view. Spacious room. Showers were very hot. as promised. There five course dinner is excellent. The brownies with Vanilla ice cream and Chicken Paprika i will definitely come back and have them.

The garden is lovely with lots of Plantain eaters in the trees. 3 dogs(One called Rango really big and scary but the sweetest dog you will ever find). Well i stayed there for only two nights but they were not enough. SO BIG UP LESLIE AND THANKS FOR THE GOOD WORK TRAINING THE STAFF. Would highly recommend it to travelers.

I had the pleasure to stay at the Karibu for 8 nights, and I enjoyed every minute I spent there. As a traveler who doesn't appreciate big hotel chains, I felt right at home at this Guesthouse. Not just Leslie and Kevin, but all their staff, go out of their way to make sure you're wanting for nothing. From the airport pickup to sundowners on the terrace to a chat at dinnertime, they are always there but never intrusive.
The room I stayed in was large, clean and bright with a giant mosquito net. The shower was warm, and the bed comfortable. There is a large terrace with parasols to sit, read and watch the sunset. There's free wifi which is surprisingly reliable. A new petanque court may not be up to French competitive standards, but it does provide for a fun game.
The food....Mediterranean cuisine in Uganda, it is definitely possible! I recommend going for dinner even if you're not staying here, just call around lunchtime to say you're coming. There's a fixed 5 course dinner each night, and Leslie can accommodate even non meat-eaters like myself. Fresh tomato-basil soup, tilapia with beurre blanc sauce, home-made pesto olives, warm brownies with vanilla ice cream (OK maybe not Mediterranean but so good I asked for leftovers for breakfast)...Everything was delicious. Breakfast is equally generous and good. You may choose to eat with other guests (there are only 4 rooms) or alone, as you please.
Location wise, it's on a hill right by the presidential palace, with beautiful views over the town. You can walk to the botanical gardens, a swimming pool, the zoo, the bank, or take a boda-boda (motortaxi). As a single woman, I felt very safe doing both, although the boda will try to rip you off. For UN staff looking to get to the base, the shuttle service will come and pick you up/drop you off if you ask nicely, which is very convenient.
All in all, I will come and stay next time I'm in Entebbe, and am recommending it to others heading that way. Don't stay just for a few hours overnight, stay longer and enjoy it!

Room Tip: They're all good, en-suite rooms that can be set up as twin or double

Entebbe. To most Kampalans the word conjures up images of, well, the airport. Whether you are a Kampala native, long-term resident or short-term visitor, Entebbe is usually little more to you than Kampala’s most remote and sleepy suburb where there is little to do except pass through on the way in or out of the country.

All that is changing now with the influx of the UN missions based there as well as a upsurge in new buildings and things to do. All told, Entebbe seems to be breaking out of Kampala’s shadow into a life of its own.

With this comes the timely arrival of Karibu Guest House on Nsamizi Hill overlooking the Lake Victoria. Having just opened in May 2012, Karibu provides a welcome addition to the limited, affordable boutique accommodation options in Entebbe.

The New Zealand and French owners have thoughtfully renovated a large house to include four self-contained rooms – each of which is decorated in the coloured theme the name suggests: Bordeaux, Café, Avocado and Mandarin. The rooms are complete with mosquito nets, and large, comfortable double or single beds. All of the rooms have large windows so can be exceptionally bright in mornings. The rates are extremely affordable being $110 USD for a double ($55 per person) or $85 for a single. Breakfast, wi-fi, and airport transfers are included with the cost.

Perhaps more exciting is Karibu’s contribution to the expansion of culinary opportunities in Entebbe. Residents, or frequent visitors, will be happy to know that they now have another dining option. Reservations are required as the kitchen mainly caters to guests but if there is an opening patrons are sure not to be disappointed. Dinner is a set menu of five courses: appetizer, soup or salad, main, dessert, and coffee or tea. One recent evening, this was: olive, garlic and oregano tapenade on homemade bread drizzled with olive oil, a hearty and flavourful creamy tomato soup, creamy paprika chicken and side vegetables of carrots, green beans and grilled tomatoes, and dessert was fried bananas drizzled with chocolate and served with vanilla ice cream. Dinner is set at $20 USD per person, or the equivalent in UGX.

Even if not having dinner the veranda provides a comfortable and quiet venue to have a sundowner while looking out over the sizeable garden and lake in the distance. With such proximity to the lake, bird fans will be delighted that a number of feathered friends frequent the mature trees and flowers in the garden – especially in the early morning hours. The compound is shared with two wonderfully friendly dogs so if you have allergies or fears do inform the owners when you make a reservation.

Myself and a friend heard about Karibu being a good place, and as we were unhappy with the hotel we were staying at at the time we decided to drop by Karibu and see what it was like. Kevin came out to welcome us straight away, and within minutes we had booked ourselves in for three nights. Incidentally I was then staying on in Uganda so I extended and stayed a full week - it was that good.

It only has four rooms but that is part of the charm - the Karibu is small, welcoming and quiet, so for me is was perfect retreat to chill out and do nothing much! They are hoping to expand with an extension of two rooms. The rooms they have are impeccably clean, well decorated and modern.

The local staff are very friendly and try their best.

The Karibu's best kept secret (which is starting to get out!) is Leslie's cooking. With notice given in the early afternoon, Leslie and her team have a 5 course dinner which really is top ranked in Entebbe (in my opinion!). I ate there most nights during my stay because the food was so good.

No TV (actually nice for a change!) in the rooms and only one power point, so maybe take a multi adaptor for the laptop / cell phone.

They have a couple of beautiful dogs that are well trained and disciplined. Some people may not like dogs, but these dogs are fine and friendly and enjoy a pat on the back and scratch behind the ear. Also helpful with security. Speaking of which, the place is well secured with perimeter walls, steel gate, day & night guards, and razor wire around the perimter wall as part of the UN compliance requirements.

The grounds are well kept daily and are immaculate.

Above all, the friendly service from Kevin and Leslie was what made the stay special. Great people who will do their best to make your stay a great one - they really do make you feel welcome!

Thoroughly recommended!
