“Worth the climb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

This is one of those places on earth that no photograph can do justice to. Built into a cliff face is some of the most stunning scenery one could imagine with mountain forests of dense evergreens. Be prepared to climb the last few hundred meters, but the payoff is worth it! The frescos are beautiful, and it's hard to imagine how this place could have ever been built. You may huff and puff a little bit, but it's certainly worth it!

“Go early”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

Went there on a saturday it was very crowded. i sugest to go early. Take a dolmus to go up, after you parked your car at destination. feom the first window at the entry you can make nice pictures from the front of the monastry. Its worth visiting Trabzon for this monastry. You can easely walk back.

“sumela monaestry”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

our trip from trabzon to sumela monastery was a very remarkable experience . we had to use a special hired car from the hotel in trabzon up to a certain location on the mountainous road from which it was not possible to use any vehicle but depend on our (legs). the sloped road with the beautiful scenery of tall dense trees on the side of the valley was captivating . the monastery itself is astonishing . difficult to imagine how the workers built this on the edge of the mountain at such an altitude and what was the reason to decide on this location. i truly hope all our readers will have an opportunity to visit this splendid place.

“Avoid high season”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

Sumela Monastery is an easy day trip from Trabzon. We used a tourist office on Trabzon Square for a shuttle. They take you up the winding, steep road to the entrance. If we did it again we'd opt to walk down the track (40mins) and meet the shuttle at the restaurant area.

Sumela Monastery was packed with tourists when we visited (high season) and was smaller than we expected. Only part of the Monastery is open to visitors. Try to avoid high season!

The day trip took about 5 hours and provided 30 mins for buying lunch (restaurants or takeaway kebab).

“Getting there is a pain, but worth it in the end.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013 via mobile

A long walk, a lot of stairs and a lot of people that don't know how to cue up, but worth it all to see how the monastery worked so many years ago.
